One of a trio of Germain hotels on our Canada road/rail trip. This one was a bit of an outlier, which whilst solid missed some of the pzazz of the other two. The rooms were fine even if both dark and decorated in dark colours. The breakfast was a small choice but absolutely covered the bases, with seating to eat in reception or side rooms which were fine. The location is great. Ignore the handful of restaurants immediately in front of the hotel and walk to the real old town 5 minutes away, turning left out of reception. The upper town is 10 minutes away up a beautiful but steep road. Our three nights though highlighted the importance of good staff. After being placed in a dingy first floor room overlooking a crane at the back, we asked to be moved. The two male reception staff said they were full, but that we try and check out early the following morning to let them find another room. We declined. We equally declined the lazy offer of a drink, which was laughable and insulting in equal measure. The following morning, we spoke to a young lady on reception to say we still wanted to move. Within half an hour she had shown us a fifth floor room which had been taken off line for the weekend due to nearby renovations. Same sized room but with a view of the river. It had also been available the previous night. The service got even better when we checked out as the female manager said we could have an 8pm checkout whilst we waited for our overnight train. Good service costs nothing. We received both ends of the spectrum. I would certainly return but choose my front of house staff carefully.

Lovely stay…attentive staff… walking distance to everything

We recently stayed at Le Germain Hotel Quebec City for 3 nights. This gorgeous hotel is in ideal location for walking Quebec City! The hotel is located very close to many attractions. Our room was very spacious and clean. All staff were very attentive and helpful especially Benoit! He made our check in process easy and gave us several local recommendations that were amazing. Thank you so much for the lovely stay!

Mysoginist on reception

The hotel is nicely situated & clean, but no restaurant. Breakfast is offered as a continental buffet which is fresh & basic. However, the stay was marred by the attitude of the man at the check in desk. He was rude and totally ignored me (F,60) & would only deal with my husband- even refused to check my ID that he’d just requested. I’ve never been so close to walking out of a hotel. Would advise female travellers to avoid.

Disappointing communication from staff when a/c broke

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

There is so much to love about this hotel: perfect location, charming and relaxing lounge areas, spacious rooms with character. Unfortunately we had a poor experience due to the way staff handled the broken air conditioning in our room. I notified staff that the a/c needed attention after a hot and stuffy night of sleep. I called the front desk at 8:30am and told them we would be out of the room from 9 until 3. I also spoke to front desk staff in person on my way out. At that point the unit was already reading 24c. When we returned at 3pm, we were told no one had yet visited the room. Instead of sending a repair person, they sent a porter who fiddled with the wall control and told us to wait 30 minutes. When we called down again, they said that we should pack up our things, and they would move us to a room that they were “cooling down right now” while we were at dinner. So we packed everything. In the meantime, front desk staff had changed shifts. When I spoke to the new staff, they admitted that they did not have an alternative room for us. They offered to open our windows. We agreed as it was starting to cool down outside. When we returned from dinner, windows were still closed and the room was the same temp. We were told they had opened the windows for a few minutes while we were at dinner but they would not remain open for fear of the open window being photographed. While they claimed they had opened the window for a short period, the temp on the wall still read 24. At this point, 10:30pm, they offered us a relocation to another hotel with working a/c. 10:30 pm. I understand completely that buildings are old and things sometimes break. I don’t expect everything to run perfectly at all times. But I do not appreciate lying and stalling from staff as a tactic to handle issues. Making us pack when they knew there would not be a room change. Promising to open windows and then not doing it. Only offering alternate accommodations when it had gotten too late to be an actual workable solution. At top tier hotels, I expect staff to be friendly, efficient problem solvers. I also expect them to be communicative and honest. Here, Le Germain missed the mark.
