Beautiful building and very friendly staff. The only disappointment was that the toilets in the public areas have a sewage like smell which is not very pleasant and some areas in the communal areas could benefit from carpets being refreshed.

Lovely welcome with a cosy log fire in the foyer. Room and bathroom very nice and well appointed. Sadly, our room was miles from the pool and indeed the dining room, so we'd definitely request a different corridor next time. Food was good at dinner but service was incredibly slow. We waited over 45 mins for our starter. Ellie was the only person who really addressed the problem and presented solutions. Really top quality, thoughtful service from Ellie. Beautiful dining room, though wall lights are horribly glaring and white. Lighting could be much improved with shades and/or different bulbs. We felt the hotel experience was compromised by its busyness this week between Christmas and New Year. Children eating pasta in the same room as people trying to enjoy an elegant pre-dinner drink doesn't really work. And the breakfast buffet opposite a bar strewn with dirty plates wasn't attractive. Very nice waitress at breakfast, however.

This is a really special place. The staff are beyond helpful and welcoming (Damon in particular was a great host) and the food is amazing. I've been to many hotels and let's say usually hotel food is 'hotel food' but not Ettington Park. They obviously have a very talented chef and catering team who present extremely high quality and tasty food. I had the Salmon starter followed by the chicken main and it was fantastic. My partner had the pork cheek starter and he raved about it. The breakfast is also top notch (eggs Royale, highly recommended) and the full English is hearty but again very high quality ingredients. The rooms are warm, comfortable and extremely clean and the grounds are just stunning (bring your walking boots if you have time for a stroll). Such a wonderful hotel - I've stayed here 3 times now (2 on business and 1 leisure) and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it for any special occasion. It's one of the Hand Picked group and I have to say, they are all fabulous but this one, I feel, is truly one of their best.

We have a 1 year old and 3 year old and it’s our yearly tradition to go on a beautiful staycation every year between Christmas and new years to a nice but family friendly hotel. This year we chose ettington park- a stunning building, a little tired inside but comfortable. The staff were so friendly and lovely- special shout out to J at breakfast who was so amazing with the girls and Beth at reception who was so helpful and moved us to an interconnecting room that was serviced by the lift when the family room didn’t work for us (fyi the family rooms are upstairs where there isn’t a lift so not great for buggy users but would be fine for older kids) The pool and jacuzzi were amazing!!! So warm which is great for little ones and super clean as well which was nice. And we enjoyed breakfast in the library and drinks in the games room in the evenings- we didn’t eat at the hotel other than that. The staff also gifted the kids with some treats and a deer cuddly toy for Christmas which my 3 year old was so thrilled with, that was really kind. Overall a good experience.

We booked 2 nights between Christmas and New Year as a quiet break for us and our dog, specifically choosing this hotel because it made a point of its dog-friendly credentials. Booking through the central Handpicked Hotels reservations service, we were told that all the Standard 'dog friendly' rooms were already taken, but there was a 'Feature' room available in the dog-friendly category. More expensive, because of the 'feature', but still with the 'dog friendly' stuff - dog bed, dog welcome kit (bowls and treats) and easy access to the outside areas. On arrival we get to the room and discover the 'Feature' is in fact an oblique view of the old abbey building across the grounds - not remotely worth paying extra for. And it's not one of the dog-friendly rooms either - these are clearly identified with a paw-print mat outside the door, which ours doesn't have. It also doesn't have the advertised dog bed, bowls, treats, or (for the humans) bottled water. The closest outside access is via a hallway, two fire doors, and a flight of stairs - but we're not too disappointed that our room isn't closer to the exit as there's obviously a problem with the drains at the far end of the hallway, judging by the whiff of sewage as you pass by. After enquiring with reception (twice) the dog bowls and treats never arrived but a bottle of water does appear, and a dog bed follows an hour or so later. This bed is great if your dog is a toy or miniature breed - our medium-sized dog can barely sit in it. I get our own dog bed from the car. Another 'feature' the room has is poor heating - the room is cold, with a distinct chill to the air. The small wall-mounted radiator is electric, and although hot to the touch it pushes almost no warmth into the room. The aircon very slowly brings the room up to a tolerable temperature. It takes about 4 hours to achieve that and is very loud, so we have to turn it off to sleep. However the one thing the electric radiator does manage to emit into the room is a bright blue sleep-disrupting light (see picture). You can't cover it up because it's on the face of the radiator, so you'd have to drape something right over it - potentially dangerous, and certain to reduce it's already-limited effectiveness to zero. With the loud aircon turned off, we have to keep the radiator on otherwise the dog will freeze in the night. We still have to cover her with her blanket - again, ours from the car. We were forewarned when booking that dogs are not allowed in the restaurant, which is especially disappointing when it looks like aside from the decor it's absolutely no different to the lounge (where guests with dogs are relegated to eat). Anyway, the first night's meal is nice, if a little pricey - we have a table set and waiting for us in the lounge at the appointed time (we booked dinner for both nights when making the room booking). That same table was set for us at breakfast the following morning. Breakfast was fine. The second night, however, was a complete clusterfork. The lounge is busy and there's no table set for us to eat, and the only unoccupied table is by the main door which is constantly in use by both guests and staff (hence why unoccupied). After declining a tiny round table in the games room (a charmless void some distance away and occupied by people playing games, unsurprisingly) we eventually eat in the bar - a small, utilitarian, uncarpeted space doubling as the queue area for the restaurant we weren't allowed into. Utterly awful, despite the glass of wine we were offered in compensation. I have eaten in nicer surroundings at a Premier Inn, and felt more valued as a guest when doing so, than I did here. The staff were friendly throughout our stay, but the hotel itself is overpriced for what you get and puts guests with dogs firmly into the second-class-citizen category despite its assertions of dog-friendliness. The centralised reservations team are obviously completely disconnected from the actual hotels, and clearly have vivid imaginations regarding room availability and 'features'. Yes, the main building at this hotel is beautiful to look at from the outside and the grounds are spacious and pleasant to stroll in, but it was definitely not worth the money we paid to stay in the 'Feature' room. We absolutely did not get the level of service they purported to offer (or that you'd even expect at a basic level, i.e. being able to get a decent night's sleep) and staying here is a very long way from being a happy experience if you bring your dog. We won't be staying here again, and would think very carefully before booking any other Handpicked venue.
