Quick Sightseeing Trip Dad/Daughter

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 days ago

I wanted to make a quick trip to D.C. with my daughter who has never been. We were coming from Boston and wanted to do the usual tourist things like see the monuments, visit the Capitol, walk around Capitol Hill, maybe visit a Smithsonian Museum, take a bus tour, maybe rent an e-bike, go out to eat once or twice, etc. We looked around the internet for a hotel that was near the White House and quickly found the Sofitel. What a great choice we made. The location is fantastic. Just up the hill from the White House (maybe 200 yards as the bird flies) and close to many restaurants, the National Mall, Smithsonian museums, etc. I would estimate the walk was 5 minutes to the White House (on Layfayette Park side), 20 minutes from hotel to Washington Monument, 20 minutes to the Museum of American History / African American Museum, and only minutes to many local restaurants (Bobby Vans, Cheesecake Factory, Old Ebbit Grill, and more). There were also a ton of e-bike and traditional bike rental locations all over the neighborhood. Also, having walked around the neighborhood over 48 hours it felt safe. At one point we made a 15 minute walk over to Thomas Square to visit a local ice cream shop (Van Leuwens - highly recommend btw) and the walk was fine. I also made an early morning walk from the hotel down to Vietnam Memorial/Lincoln Memorial and just loved walking around the city. Took about 45 minutes. Great walk. The hotel staff was very friendly and efficient from start to finish, the facility was clean (outside, entryway, lobby, elevators, hallways, lobby bathroom) and the room we booked was great. The free coffee in the morning in the lobby was a nice touch as was the Nescafe machine in the room + the constant refill of courtesy water bottles . I think we went thru about 10 of those over 48 hours. We booked the Junior Presidential suite because it had one bedroom with twin beds plus a lounge area with pull out couch. The suite was very spacious very clean, well appointed, the AC worked great, on and on. The suite was on the 11th (of 12) floors and while we didn't have that much of a view the suite did have 10 windows so a ton of natural light. The beds were very very comfortable (honestly) and I felt that the price was also very reasonable given the suite + the location (remember, I'm from Boston where everyone is more expensive just because). I honestly can't come up with a genuine complaint or critique. I would highly recommend for all the reasons just stated.

Not a 5 Star Hotel

We booked and paid for our room in advance. We called to ask questions and was told that our room would be ready and available when we arrive. Upon arrival there wasn’t a room available and we were told that it would be a 3-4 hour wait or we would have to take a different room on a lower floor. We informed them that we could not wait that long as we had reservations. We couldn’t understand why a room was reserved and cleaned prior to because we’d already booked and paid in advance. We were placed in a room that was not cleaned, the door lock broken. Used water cartons left for us and other people open food had been left in the drawers and their hair accessories as well. Everything was dusty, other people hair was visible on the bed and in the bathroom, it appeared to be coffee stains on the mattress, sockets didn’t work, work desk top was bubbled up, shades were broken and damaged. Iron did not work, and no microwave or fridge to keep our expensive leftovers cool. A wine cooler was there but that didn’t work either. We were placed in another room after our complaints and were told that they know we have to leave so they will wait for us to come back to speak with management. While we were out staff decided to enter our room to leave a bottle of wine and macaroons. We appreciated the gesture but did not like the fact that they waited to enter the room once we left. Overall, our experience was not good. The thought of being at what’s considered a 5star hotel makes one feel like their experience will be exceptionally great. And for some it may have been but unfortunately for us it was not.

Exceptional Stay and Lovely Service

We had to travel to the DC area for a Celebration of Life event, (outside the city), and found the perfect combination of serenity and convenience with exceptional service. It was also perfectly located for exploring the Smithsonian Museums, Capital buildings, and monuments. This will be our "go-to", home away from home when we visit again!
