Bucket List Trip for Fly Fishing Enthusiasts!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed September 1, 2023

This is a bucket-list trip for epic fly fishing in a stunning setting along with gourmet food and wine and well-appointed cabins. Firehole Ranch has well-earned every accolade. The guides (Hunter in my case) are awesome people, very knowledgable, rabid to put you on great fish and, above all, patient! Staff, including the owner, work hard to meet your every need -- in most cases without ever asking. Food is top notch, the weekly BBQ is magnificent, and the wine and custom cocktails are as good as any place in a major city. A max of 20 guests or so make this a very relaxed experience. But it books up fast! Run don't walk to Firehole Ranch

Another great trip

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed December 2, 2022

Great accommodations, great food, great fishing, secluded location. Couldn't ask for more. The cookout was fabulous. Our fishing guide, Chris King, was great again. Fishing the Henry's Fork and the Madison never disappoint.

The negative reviews are spot-on

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed November 3, 2022

I read many reviews before my stay at Firehole Ranch. After my time there, I do believe the few negative reviews available online should be carefully considered before booking a stay here. The location is beautiful but being on a lake and having to take a boat across the lake before and after fishing does limit the time one can fish. The staff is very accommodating and my guide was fantastic. The food is very good. Those who have noted issues with the seating arrangements at dinner are spot-on. My first night, traveling solo, I was seated at a table by myself. I was expected to sit through a 100 minute dinner by myself. Fortunately the couple at the table next to me took pity on me and invited me to join them. My comments to the management about this situation were not responded to. Firehole Ranch is extremely pricey. My impression is that selects for certain clientele. I've had a much better experience with fellow guests at other fishing lodges.

Amazing Experience!!!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed October 6, 2021

Our visit to Firehole Ranch was the highlight of our trip out west. Located on the shores of beautiful Hebgen Lake, this property is first class and so are its owner and staff. We have never felt so welcome as we did when we stepped foot on this spectacular piece of property. The owner Lyndy, along with Stephen, Jess, and all the rest of the staff went well above and beyond, and out of their way, to make sure our time at the ranch was perfect. We plan to stay longer next year and have already booked it! I highly recommend Firehole Ranch!!!

Wonderful Place, But Terrible Owner!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed August 12, 2021

We are well-traveled and have stayed at a number of fly fishing lodges and dude ranches around the country, so we know what to expect at a world-class establishment like Firehole. First the positives, which are the reasons we gave the ranch an "Excellent" here on Trip Advisor, as well as on Firehole's own guest feedback survey. 1. The setting is stunningly beautiful. 2. Service by the staff was absolutely outstanding! They were delighful young people trying really hard to please, despite comment #1 below. 3. The fishing guides were expert, well-mannered and accommodating. And the fishing itself was amazing! Now the negatives: 1. The owner, Lyndy Caine, should step back from day-to-day management of Firehole and leave things to a professional manager. She is a very regimented and unpleasant person. From comments we heard, we picked up on the fact that both staff and guests consider her too controlling. She arranges the seating for dinner and guests have no choice in the matter. We noticed that she became irritated when we asked to borrow an iron, when we needed ice, and when we needed help with the front door of our cabin, which was stuck shut. At dinner on our last night she made a point of insulting us in front of the other guests, simply because we were exhausted and wanted to eat alone on our first night, a request that Lyndy had very reluctantly allowed. 2. Though the food was very well prepared and presented, we noticed that during the three nights we were there, the fish choice was cod for two nights in a row. On the third night, the scallops were really tiny. As lovely as the breakfasts are, the jelly is provided in diner-style plastic packets. Rather curious and certainly not consistent with a high-end resort. 3. Other reviewers on this web site have noted that the bar is really not as available as represented in Firehole's literature and that guests cannot get a drink outside of Lyndy's strict "cocktail hour". From what we observed, this is true. 4. Our cabin, as historic and charming as it was, was in dire need of maintenance (for that sticking front door) and refurbishment. The carpeting, upholstery, and window treatments were old and dirty. 5. Comments 2-4 above lead us to wonder where the money is going in this operation. Apparently, Lyndy is not reinvesting in the business as a wise owner should be. Although we ourselves had a great time at Firehole largely because of the positives, we will not return and would not recommend it.
