Luxury setting and hotel yet let down by service

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 18 hours ago

A superb historic hotel, 5 star amenities yet service let it down. Sited within a close position to the city centre, atmosphere was one of luxury as we had hoped. Service was slow however, the room was late, as was our luggage. Bearing in mind this was a one night luxury spa break all of which meant less time available to use. Expensive also. Having stayed in some very fine hotels internationally, £85 for a bottle of wine that you can buy for £12.50 gives you some context. We appreciate fully that you pay a premium price for a premium hotel, we are not naive, yet that for us was a little steep bearing in mind that service was slow. The room was gorgeous, yet the mini bar was empty bar from two already opened and partially drunk bottles of water. Would go back yet would expect better.

Excellent all round

Two night break including NYE in the Rise restaurant. Beautiful hotel with lovely friendly and helpful staff. From the minute you enter the doors and are greeted by the concierge until check out you are made to feel special. Room on 5th floor was quiet and comfortable with huge bathroom and massive walk in shower. Only slight nights was the bathroom could be a little chilly. But lots off hot water with great pressure which can sometimes be a problem on high floors. Food and restaurant staff fantastic and breakfast choice excellent. Probably the nicest UK hotel we have stayed in

Absolutely amazing stay here! The staff are just so welcoming and friendly. Shout out to Emma in the spa and Esther in the breakfast lounge as well as the concierge team. We stayed for a special occasion amd we couldn't have chosen a better place to stay The Spa has been recently refurbished and is fantastic. Its small but numbers are limited so it didnt feel crowded even though we were told the hotel was at 100% occupancy! The room was lovely and spacious with a great heating adjuster which meant we could have the room slightly cooler as a lot of hotels have the temp set the same so this was an added bonus for us. The location for the train station and exploring York was fantastic! The staff are what makes this hotel so amazing everyone we spoke to was friendly and wanted to help in anyway to make our stay the best! Thankyou so much

Unfortunately, detail not good enough for us.

I base this review on the fact I paid nearly £200 for room only and my expectations on what I would expect for that and value for money. The check in was perfect, very friendly and efficient. Told where our room was and proceeded on. The room was clean, spacious, large bed, FOC crisps, rose lemonade, Tea and Coffee, Shortbread, Milton Brown and all good so far. And then we saw it.... Dirty shower seals. It stood out like a sore thumb. We are in hospitality ourselves and know that this build up takes time to accumulate so it's my guess this had not been cleaned properly for a good length of time. I do expect better than that.!!. Left for the evening to eat out. Retired to the bar about 9.45pm. Saw there were staff attending to tables, so proceeded to find somewhere to sit. Sat waiting for at least ten minutes and nobody came and it seemed to me that the staff were too busy chatting to be attentive to us. No one acknowledged us or the fact we were waiting. I approached the bar in an effort to get a drink and was told to "take a seat sir, someone would come to you". Waited another 5/6 minutes and still nobody came. We were just about to leave and head out to a pub when someone turned up to serve us. She was friendly enough. So would I stay here again. Well, I'd certainly like to but I would think twice based on the experience we had and the price we paid. Stayed on the evening of the 30/12/25
