Everything here was first class from greeting on arrival to breakfast Sadly one of our party suffered a stroke and had to be hospitalised whilst we stayed and so we had to extend our stay in Zagreb. The hotel was full so we couldn’t stay on but Monika, duty manager helped as much as she could.

Esplanade Zagreb is celebrating 100 years and the hotel is steeped in history. Really enjoyed staying here ! The rooms are very large, as is the bathroom. The showers are rather small. You can access many shops and restaurants walking from the hotel and there is a fabulous park extremely close by. The breakfast is amazing and evening drinks are delightful !

I booked at this hotel because my tour guide in Slovenia told me this is a historic and most famous hotel in Zagreb. If I see him again, I will take my tip back. The hotel itself is centrally located and does have the historic charm. However, the service here is far below what one would expect in a 5 star hotel. When I arrived at the hotel, there was little bit of a traffic backup at the hotel entrance. I rolled down the backseat window to ask one of the bell staff if it’s okay to get down there so the car driver can take off. He stunned me with a very angry and rude response saying ‘wait, wait, one car goes another car comes’. His demeanor and tone for such a simple question shocked me. I have noticed that other bell staff were not particularly nice to the other customers either. I am not sure if any other 5 star hotels welcome their customers this way. I did mention this to receptionist who checked me in (she was nice, thankfully) and she may have talked to her manager later but the bell staff came and apologized to me. I just let it go at that time but the fact that he even felt comfortable talking to a customer like that still surprises me. What if I didn’t mention it to the receptionist and she didn’t tell her manager? This guy would treat all the customers that way? What kind of a welcome is this? I booked a Deluxe Suite but they gave me a Junior Deluxe Suite. When the receptionist mentioned ‘junior suite’, I promptly reminded her that I booked a Deluxe Suite, she said ‘yeah, this is a Deluxe Suite’, but as soon as I walked in I knew this was a Junior Suite because of the size and pictures on the website. I didn’t call them again to change the room as I was tired and it was a short stay. So, I just decided to let it go. It’s also possible that the third party that I booked through may have made a mistake even though I have email confirmation to show. I wasn’t so much mad at them but I wish they had at least made an attempt to double check rather than just ignoring it. There was no tea kettle in the room and I called the house keeping if they can bring one. The guy said he will bring a tea kettle and the tea bags are extra price but he will give them for free for me. I am not sure if I have come across any other hotel that would charge extra for a darn tea bag! I thought he may have been joking but he definitely didn’t sound like that. When I checked out, the bell staff were just standing and looking and didn’t help me with the luggage. Uber driver came and helped me with the luggage.

This hotel is like a grand old lady! Very traditional and in a perfect place for exploring the city. Staff very professional. We ate in the restaurant on our first night and the food was good but the portion size of sides was ridiculously small - potatoes and vegetables are so cheap why do they do that? I would say that the vast majority of fellow guests were American so I don’t know how they coped…. We enjoyed our stay but I don’t think it would work for younger people or families.
