Hotel is clearly a mediocre Hyatt that they slapped the Thompson name on. The rooms are large and surprisingly nice relative to the rest of the hotel that is aggressively “meh”. The grounds are uninteresting, the restaurants are boring. Last night there was a saxophonist that was playing along to some track of Latin covers of American pop music. So cheesy and loud we had to find someone where else to eat. The staff are nice and service is solid, but the hotel lacks any vibe or character that I would expect of a Thompson. Guess you get what you pay for.

Nothing short of amazing! This is our second time staying at the Thompson in Zihua and it was even better than we remember. The breakfast, beach and dinner service are all exceptional! Eli (Elizabeth) and Hiliberto start your day at breakfast with a smile and top notch hospitality. Francisco at the beach is equally as attentive, kind and very passionate about offering incredible service. He also gives the best recommendations! Marcos and Antonio are happy to make you drinks at the pool bar. The grounds are immaculate and the rooms are spotless. I cannot say enough positive things about the service, people and overall accommodations that we have now be able to get to know after two visits! There is no doubt that we'll be back! One last thing, don't forget to get the French toast:)

Unfortunately my review will not be a complacent assessment because we were on vacation in a beautiful place. Regarding the hotel itself, there was lots of deferred maintenance. Will add some pictures here but these are a few of the things I noted-faulty and torn screen doors, sliding doors malfunctioning, electrical wires visible (in pool!) where lights had been removed, lots of missing tiles in pools, tables and chairs in disrepair, spider webs hanging from all over the gym ceiling, WiFi often not functioning. In short this is not a luxury hotel, it is an overpriced budget hotel. Perhaps most disappointing was that my son had food poisoning from one of the meals consumed at the hotel restaurant. After reporting the incident, no attempt was made to call a doctor to evaluate him. Fortunately I am a physician myself and was able to offer supportive care. But what if I was not? Perhaps most disappointing was that the manager, Oscar, in a few words told us he would have to contemplate what if anything the hotel would do. Not really a courteous nor professional thing to do. Fortunately the Executive Chef did come and apologize and offered to waive the cost of the meal as well as an additional meal. The rest of the staff were also incredible, attentive and professional. Overall a beautiful location but an average hotel with deferred maintenance and a less than desirable manager that became defensive and not helpful in a medical situation that was created by infected food.
