Along on Mexicoâ€(TM)s Pacific coastline, in the picturesque fishing village of Zihuatanejo, Viceroy Zihuatanejo graces the white sands of Playa La Ropa. At this Fodorâ€(TM)s Choice Hotel, no two of the adobe-type villas are alikeâ€"perhaps youâ€(TM)ll stay in a palapa in which a twisted tree trunk holds up its tile roof. Here, at this beachfront sanctuary, youâ€(TM)ll have a difficult decision before you: Should you enjoy a leisurely stroll through the meandering pathways or drift in the infinity pool that seems to spill right into the ocean?
Although filled with resort amenities and facilities, this property has the intimate feel of a boutique hotel with personalized service to match. Simply raise the flag outside your doorway, and white linen table service will arrive. Itâ€(TM)s just steps to the palm-shaded private beach, where warm waters are ideal for swimming. Arrangements can be made for sailing, water skiing, snorkeling, scuba diving or deep sea fishing. And savor an elegant candlelit dinner at The Restaurant at Viceroy Zihuatanejo or fresh seafood at La Cantina Bar & Grill.

Located on a prime spot of land on La Ropa Beach, the Thompson’s beachfront access can’t be beat. Private palapas come with a dining table, and service at the beach was top notch, as was the food there. We also enjoyed breakfast (but not dinner) at Hao. Our room was nicely decorated and featured a large outdoor terrace and plunge pool overlooking the lagoon and a slice of the ocean. We love Zihua and would definitely stay at The Thompson again.

We have stayed at the Thompson for many years. It is a special paradise . It is located in one of the most beautiful places in the world . If you go there once you will always want to go back! But what makes it extra special are the people they are experienced they are efficient and want to make sure you have a wonderful time. Over the years I have known Abigail, who approaches her job with professionalism and enthusiasm. She is one of a kind. Also Bruno, Eddie ,Juan , and Francisco not only wonderful people but they make your stay extra special. Thank you to the Thompson for making all those years so wonderful. Because of our experience we purchased a place! . We will miss the Thompson but we will see you again. Hugs from Sandy and Fred

Just returned from a 4 night trip to Thompson Resort in ZIH. You would never know it’s a Hyatt as it is a small boutique style hotel, 30 min from the airport. We stayed in a swim up suite - which means there is a pool off the patio that you share with about 11 other rooms. We enjoyed the pool, but honestly, not worth a lot more money as the adult pool wasn’t very far from our room. The grounds are beautiful, the staff is very friendly and La Ropa beach is nice for walking. Of course, it’s not the white sand/turquoise water of the Yucatán beaches, but was nice for the Pacific. There are no lounge chairs by the adult pool, which I thought was odd, but there are very comfy lounge chairs with umbrellas and palapas on the beach. No need to rush and wake up to grab a chair. There were plenty, and the beach staff set everything up once you arrived. Lunch service on the beach was excellent and was offered through the Hao Restaurant. My biggest disappointment was the food at the restaurant for breakfast/dinner. We paid for the Mexican Fiesta night which was $60pp and I felt the food was limited and certainly did not warrant that price tag. That being said, the music was excellent and the bingo game was fun. Personally, I enjoy having a place on site that serves dessert — ice cream or yummy baked goods and this property has no such thing. It has a very tiny shop that has a freezer with ice cream bars - so may be perfect for some, just didn’t meet my needs. Front desk was very helpful. Easy to grab a taxi $100 MXN 1-way to town taxi drivers were super nice. We ate at Triton and felt the service was awful and the food was only ok. Went to Banditos in town which we highly recommend. Great food, great music, excellent service. Went to El Suspiro - food was okay but view is incredible -especially watching the sunset. We had breakfast at Carmelita’s twice and enjoyed the food and hospitality. So overall, nice resort if you are looking for a very low key vacation with a walk in the beach but may want to venture out for dining.

The staff was lovely. The room was spacious and quiet - except the toilet has a saloon type door and is not very private. The beach is fairly quiet and swimmable. Margaritas were outstanding. Overall a very relaxing place to be. Nothing like the higher traffic tourist spots.

This is our third stay at this property in the past four years. We have stayed in a Beach Suite, a Swim-Up Suite, and in a Lagoon Suite and each of these has benefits (though the Lagoon Suite has the best size. Everything about this hotel is outstanding. The rooms are great, the beach and the pool areas are great, and the location on Playa La Ropa is perfect (easy access to town, local restaurants, sunsets). But what really makes this a wonderful stay is the service provided by all of the staff. They do everything right to make your stay perfect. Front Desk and Housekeeping are responsive. But most of all, the staff at Hao are all welcoming, attentive, and make the guests feel at home. In particular, Ellie at the restaurant and Juan on the beach are two reasons we will be back - outstanding and warm service always. Gracias a todos!
