About the Hotel

Along on Mexicoâ€(TM)s Pacific coastline, in the picturesque fishing village of Zihuatanejo, Viceroy Zihuatanejo graces the white sands of Playa La Ropa. At this Fodorâ€(TM)s Choice Hotel, no two of the adobe-type villas are alikeâ€"perhaps youâ€(TM)ll stay in a palapa in which a twisted tree trunk holds up its tile roof. Here, at this beachfront sanctuary, youâ€(TM)ll have a difficult decision before you: Should you enjoy a leisurely stroll through the meandering pathways or drift in the infinity pool that seems to spill right into the ocean?

Although filled with resort amenities and facilities, this property has the intimate feel of a boutique hotel with personalized service to match. Simply raise the flag outside your doorway, and white linen table service will arrive. Itâ€(TM)s just steps to the palm-shaded private beach, where warm waters are ideal for swimming. Arrangements can be made for sailing, water skiing, snorkeling, scuba diving or deep sea fishing. And savor an elegant candlelit dinner at The Restaurant at Viceroy Zihuatanejo or fresh seafood at La Cantina Bar & Grill.

A True Review

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

Unfortunately my review will not be a complacent assessment because we were on vacation in a beautiful place. Regarding the hotel itself, there was lots of deferred maintenance. Will add some pictures here but these are a few of the things I noted-faulty and torn screen doors, sliding doors malfunctioning, electrical wires visible (in pool!) where lights had been removed, lots of missing tiles in pools, tables and chairs in disrepair, spider webs hanging from all over the gym ceiling, WiFi often not functioning. In short this is not a luxury hotel, it is an overpriced budget hotel. Perhaps most disappointing was that my son had food poisoning from one of the meals consumed at the hotel restaurant. After reporting the incident, no attempt was made to call a doctor to evaluate him. Fortunately I am a physician myself and was able to offer supportive care. But what if I was not? Perhaps most disappointing was that the manager, Oscar, in a few words told us he would have to contemplate what if anything the hotel would do. Not really a courteous nor professional thing to do. Fortunately the Executive Chef did come and apologize and offered to waive the cost of the meal as well as an additional meal. The rest of the staff were also incredible, attentive and professional. Overall a beautiful location but an average hotel with deferred maintenance and a less than desirable manager that became defensive and not helpful in a medical situation that was created by infected food.

Our Second Home

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

This was my husband's and my 2nd time staying at the Thompson. We LOVED it the first time we went to Zihua in 2021. Instead of gambling with going somewhere else in Mexico, we wanted to go back to this amazing resort and town of Zihuatanejo! The Thompson is just a FANTASTIC, peaceful resort with beautiful rooms and privacy! We feel as if it is our 2nd home and will always go back! The beach of Playa La Ropa is directly out the front door and gorgeous! The town is walking distance (good exercise up and down the hills) and super convenient, although we did take a short taxi ride home in the evening. It also has an fantastic gym in a beautiful little hut, which I used in the early morning to start my day. Thank you to the wonderful staff at Thompson for your courtesy and service, making our vacation top notch!!!!

Wonderful Hotel!

Just returned from 10 days at the Thompson. A beautiful hotel! The staff was amazing and service out of this world. The swim up room was spacious and loved the indoor outdoor shower. The beach is just 30 ft away, with very nice palapas each with two padded comfortable lounge chairs and a table and chairs for eating. You just raise a flag and in seconds there is a lovely waiter to Take your order or requests. Really the ultimate in luxury and relaxation. We only tried the Hao restaurant which was nice, although a bit pricey for the area. They were very nice in making requests not on the menu. Room service was fast and delicious. There are many other restaurants along the beach and road in front of the hotel. Every one we tried was very good, especially seafood choices. The spa gave a very good massage. The gym seemed nice, but was a bit too warm for a workout in June. A couple of things that could be improved: the bedside lamp was stylish, but you had to get up to turn it off and on, as the switch was at the very top. The swim up pool was beautiful and clean, but difficult to get in and out of for this senior. The other two pools do have stairs and a railing. The addition of a grab bar in the outdoor shower would also have bee appreciated. The property is mainly flat, unusual for Zihuatenejo, and easy to navigate, with minimal stairs etc. We were there in the off season, very uncrowded, the weather was hot with rain most nights. Very tropical. I would highly recommend! One of the nicest hotels we have stayed in.
