Along on Mexicoâ€(TM)s Pacific coastline, in the picturesque fishing village of Zihuatanejo, Viceroy Zihuatanejo graces the white sands of Playa La Ropa. At this Fodorâ€(TM)s Choice Hotel, no two of the adobe-type villas are alikeâ€"perhaps youâ€(TM)ll stay in a palapa in which a twisted tree trunk holds up its tile roof. Here, at this beachfront sanctuary, youâ€(TM)ll have a difficult decision before you: Should you enjoy a leisurely stroll through the meandering pathways or drift in the infinity pool that seems to spill right into the ocean?
Although filled with resort amenities and facilities, this property has the intimate feel of a boutique hotel with personalized service to match. Simply raise the flag outside your doorway, and white linen table service will arrive. Itâ€(TM)s just steps to the palm-shaded private beach, where warm waters are ideal for swimming. Arrangements can be made for sailing, water skiing, snorkeling, scuba diving or deep sea fishing. And savor an elegant candlelit dinner at The Restaurant at Viceroy Zihuatanejo or fresh seafood at La Cantina Bar & Grill.

Beach is Gorgeous. The hotel has nice rooms, good food and the setting is very nice. I enjoyed very much the service and the great staff. Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are lovely places to visit with the best weather all year round.

The Thompson Zihuatanejo Resort is an elegant, tranquil oasis with superb accommodations, food and drink. This being said, it is the resort staff that really helped make our stay that much more memorable. They were all genuinely warm and friendly and willing to aid us with any request. We have stayed along Playa Roja since 2010. Each time that we passed by this resort, we would tell ourselves that we would stay here one day. Well, that "one day" was this past New Year's Eve, and we departed kicking ourselves for not having stayed here sooner. We chose this destination and this resort as a way to decompress after the hectic holiday season and to just clear our minds without any itinerary in mind, just a lot of down time. We spent one entire day at the beach under one of their palapas. We stayed in one of the adults only swim-up rooms adjacent to the beach. The room was spacious, impeccably clean and quiet. It had ample storage capacity for our suitcases and clothes. The bathroom with double sinks was more than sufficient for the two of us. The shower (no tub) was spacious with sufficient hot water on demand. An added bonus was the adjacent, outdoor, open-air shower surrounded by tall walls and set in tropical landscaping as if you were under a waterfall in the jungle. The resort offered guests a New Year's Eve Celebration (for an additional cost) that we will not soon forget. It featured an elegant dinner, without any dress code - you are on the beach, in either of their 2 restaurants followed by a spectacular beach party with a DJ and dance floor, with a sort of Cirque du Soleil theme with costumed performers, some on stilts, some dancing on platforms and a woman elevated in the air in a ring like a trapeze artist. The culmination was an amazing fireworks show with shells fired from both ends of the resort beach front and under a Supermoon which lit up the night sky. The restaurants offered high quality fare, and we did not need to venture off site for any meal. It is important that we point out that they have gluten free options and their GF bread was superb and some of the best that we have tasted in our many travels around the world. We will be returning next year. Saludos y gracias to the General Manager and the entire staff.

Our friend had a problem when checking into the hotel - our friend arrived a day late due to a passport/airline problem. This wasn't a Thompson problem. Abigail in reservations went above and beyond the call of duty, and solved the problem very quickly!

This was our 4th visit and we had the same relaxing wonderful experience as always. Staff is so pleasant and helpful. Plus they work hard to remember your preferences on the beach and in the restaurants. Our favorite place is the infinity pool overlooking the beach and lounging under a palapa. Already thinking about dates for a return visit!

I wanted to stay on La Ropa and this is by far the nicest resort on the beach. It is small, however, with only 56 rooms. The "boutique" was very sparse with a few beach cover ups and some very overpriced sunscreen. The "spa" isn't really a spa. You can get treatments, but they only have the treatment rooms. There is no lounge area (well there is, but it's not much of one and you don't get to use it), steam bath, sauna, pool, showers, etc. You get called in for your treatment and then you leave when you are done. Massage and facial were fine. The adult pool is just okay and oddly situated right next to the restaurant. However, the ocean and beach are amazing. Mattress and pillows were terrible and need to be replaced. Staff was friendly, room was clean, room service arrived in a reasonable time. Food was good. Overall, a good experience but improvements could be made.
