Rhett House Inn

A truly unique experience in Savannah. This is not a typical chain hotel where you come looking for modern luxury—it is something much more special. The house has been beautifully restored while preserving the charm, character, and atmosphere of its original period. In many ways, that authenticity is the real luxury of staying here. It gives you the opportunity to experience Savannah in a completely different way and to imagine what life in one of these historic homes might have been like in the past. The people are exceptional. The service is warm, personal, and genuinely welcoming, making you feel more like a guest in a beautiful home than a customer in a hotel. If you are looking for character, history, atmosphere, and a genuine connection with Savannah, this is a place you should experience. A one-of-a-kind stay and highly recommended!

My family could not wait to stay at The Rhett House Inn, especially after reading rave reviews. Because the Inn only has two rooms with more than one bed, we booked Room 7's garden room after seeing the bright, attractive photos on its website. Upon arrival, we immediately learned there's no valet or bellhop to assist with luggage. The beautiful antebellum home is three floors, with no elevator, and you're expected to carry your bags yourself. Given the house is nearly 200 years old, I get it, but beware if you have an 86-year-old mother trying to navigate a very steep, concrete, curved staircase to the veranda, sans handrail. There's a basement entry and back entry to the kitchen that are easier to navigate. The friendly receptionist let us know, fear not, the room we booked was actually in the basement. Did she say 'basement"? Indeed, we went to our room and found ourselves not in the sunny "charming" garden room we saw online, but in Aunt Edna's Bargain Basement - dark, dirty, dingy, and funished with items that looked like they fell from the back of a Goodwill truck along I-95. Here's what we found in our "boutique hotel," which cost $323 for the night: * a hodge-podge of furnishings that looked cheap, dusty, with chipped paint, * soiled fabric seats on chairs, * a window a/c unit buzzing, * a broken blind we could not adjust, * a TV remote that was not fully functional, * a main nightstand lamp that did not work, * gaudy, modern artwork in an otherwise historic home, * a non-functional fireplace that displayed a fake fire, * two clothes hangers in the closet for three guests, * visible stains along the walls, and * a bathroom devoid of any tile, signs of cleaning, and reminscent of what you would expect to see in a Motel-6. There's a reason you don't see any photos of the bathrooms on the Inn's website. Our bathroom was small, outdated, dirty, and had a plastic shower-insert with, as my mother noted, a single, suction-cupped plastic grab bar. No slippage mat. She was afraid to take a shower, opting against it. The shower was so old the faucets were hard to adjust. Mold was seen along the plastic shampoo holder. We saw dirt in the corners, chipped paint, dirt on the doors, moldings, and walls. We were mortified. By the time we noticed much of this, it was too late to complain, as the Inn is devoid of all staff at night. No one mans this ship in case of any problems. The lone staffer who left for the evening told my 11-year-old to lock the front door. As we sat on the pretty veranda, being August - we went to turn on the porch ceiling fan. Broken, a staffer said. The veranda porch light? Also broken. The next morning, we looked forward to the Inn's famous breakfast. That was good, with an impressive array of offerings. But we were seated at a table with black mold visible on the tablecloth. At that point, we could not wait to leave. At check-out, no one at the Inn asked us how our stay was. I will say this - I've never written a review, and did so to warn other travelers not to make the mistake I made when booking this Inn. Maybe the other rooms are different. I hope so. Although all of the staff were friendly and helpful, the Inn desperately needs cleaning and renovation (aside from the recent renovation of the veranda's columns). Even the main staircase was soiled. The front parlor is lined with framed photos of celebrities and glowing reviews, but, when you look more closely, those articles and photos are faded: they're 10, 15, even 25 years old. That photo of Kevin Bacon and his family dates back to his "Footloose" days of the 80s. After leaving, we stopped out of curiosity at the Beaufort Inn a couple of blocks away. It was cheaper, clean, and absolutely lovely. Save your money and go there or the Best Western across the street. Even the Motel-6 would do better than this.

We had been wanting to stay here for years. We lived in Beaufort and always thought the Rhett House Inn was a beautiful place! Unfortunately our stay was disappointing. The inn was under construction, which is understandable, but we thought that should have been disclosed when we made our direct booking reservation. The mattress in our room was incredibly uncomfortable - time for a replacement. We may try again in the future but we’re very disappointed in this stay.

Arriving at the Rhett House Inn for a girls’ weekend, we were greeted by innkeepers Robin and Emma who both went above and beyond to acclimate us to the property. They made sure we had the codes we needed to access our accommodations, gave us maps of the nearby business district, suggested great dinner recommendations, shared some history of the inn (and it has plenty of history), and told us about the sumptuous snacks in the commons area. Also, an array of homemade desserts were offered nightly for guests returning from dinner in the evening. We stayed in the Newcastle House which was just incredible. Separate from the main house, it had two bedrooms (each with a private bath), a kitchen equipped with oven, microwave, dishwasher, large refrigerator, Keurig coffeemaker and all the plates, glassware and utensils anyone could possibly need. There was a spacious area for gathering that felt more like a home than a hotel and screened porches overlooking the main house and gardens with wind chimes softly ringing in the breeze. Attention to detail was apparent everywhere from relaxed outdoor common areas, to plush terry cloth robes, to bikes to explore the town … thoughtful touches for guests to enjoy were noticed and appreciated. Lastly, this review would not be complete without mentioning the complementary breakfast. The choices were numerous from French toast, blueberry pancakes, eggs, bacon, hash brown potatoes, grits (some of the best we’ve ever tasted), yogurt parfait and biscuits fresh out of the oven. Tea, coffee and juice rounded out the delectable selections and it was impossible to make a bad choice! The only downside to our stay was that it wasn’t long enough … we plan to return (maybe next time we will even include our husbands)! 🙂
