About the Hotel

When it opened in 1873, The Chanler at Cliff Walk was a mecca in Newport, Rhode Island for financiers, industrialists and tycoons. Following a multi-million dollar restoration, it today epitomizes the glories of yesteryear with lavishly adorned mansion accommodations, and garden and ocean villas that boast private gated courtyards. The name of each room reflects its décor, from the romantic English Trellis Room to the Renaissance Junior Suite evocative of Versailles.

Best Inn I’ve Ever Stayed At!

What a fantastic experience! Most accommodating, pleasant & professional staff. Everything was perfection: the view, the rooms, the food & especially, the staff!

Amazing

Hotel was a special 40th birthday surprise and the rooms facing the ocean with hot tubs were absolutely magical. Everything from the decor to the body wash was top knotch. Only thing a little “off” was the staff. I get that they must have very high end clientele at this price point so maybe we didn’t appear to be guests in our average jeans and sneakers. But we told them several times we were guests in the suite and they still treated us a little weird and unwelcoming and “what are you doing here?” vibes. Made us very uncomfortable.

Perfect location! The restaurant food is exceptional! The rooms are decorated in a well done period style and comfortable. There were things we were disappointed in, such as the smell of the room; the lack of curtesy from a desk attendant when we asked about local places; ants on the private deck; the “sauna” door would not shut properly; the “hot tub” was more of a soaking tub. We stayed in what we were told was the best room so our experience was less than expected.

Scardina Stay

We enjoyed our stay, but we did experience some issues in our room. Some additional services would be nice as indicated in prior sections.

Great hotel, top lawn empty

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Amazing place. May be biased because our family just came from The Wauwinet in Nantucket, but we wondered why The Chanler doesn’t have lounge/laying chairs on their top lawn. The lawn is completely empty, which suggests they think of it as a venue/events spot. Not what you would expect from a boutique hotel, which should prioritize hotel guests. The views of the hotel + cliff walk are crazy beautiful from the top. With the fountain + some music it could be amazing to lay there with a book + glass of wine, as an experience for hotel guests only.. Also would prob recommend music on the small pathway to our room which was the Martha’s Cineyard. You can hear cars from the boulevard, and some nice soft music could soften it. Last point is that breakfast is good but not amazing. Food’s great but hotels of this caliber generally have more going on for breakfast. Also felt like a point the hotel should show some more love to. But all over a great stay!!

My husband and I just returned from a 3-night stay at The Chanler at Cliff Walk. Our stay was fabulous as was the staff, the Spiced Pear Restaurant and our room. It is located perfectly at the beginning of Cliff Walk and has great access to all the mansions. We have used Luxury Link many times and our stay at The Chanler was one of our best. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone!
