When it opened in 1873, The Chanler at Cliff Walk was a mecca in Newport, Rhode Island for financiers, industrialists and tycoons. Following a multi-million dollar restoration, it today epitomizes the glories of yesteryear with lavishly adorned mansion accommodations, and garden and ocean villas that boast private gated courtyards. The name of each room reflects its décor, from the romantic English Trellis Room to the Renaissance Junior Suite evocative of Versailles.

The Chanler is more than just a hotel stay. It is more of a magical experience, from first arriving and greeted by exceptional staff to the housekeeping, which is phenomenal, and comes twice a day .To the views from most windows of the Atlantic Ocean ,to the grounds, which are almost heavenly in their beauty with beautiful flowers, perfect lawn ,ocean breezes, beautiful views of beaches and oceans. The rooms are all different and unique …each one is beautifully decorated .The on-site restaurant is an experience unto itself. The staff is great ,the food delicious, and the atmosphere unbeatable .My best times on this trip were when I was dining at this restaurant. Both for breakfast and lunches, but their Cadillac car will take you in town to dine at whatever restaurant you want to go to. I have been there six times and each time was amazing. It is more expensive than your average Newport hotel room, but if you can afford it, you definitely should. It will not disappoint. It has never disappointed me. Already planning my next trip back there.

The whole point of our two hour drive was to sit and look at the ocean. We heard Remy’s Loose had wonderful food and were very excited. Sadly, the outdoor space is pretty underwhelming (it was also quite hot, though windy, so with plastic curtains covering the view) and the indoor Remy’s Loose has incredible ocean views but those are reserved for Cara only. We could easily afford Cara, but we wanted the Remy’s Loose menu, and it was lunch time. Why wouldn’t they let us sit in the dining room overlooking the Ocean? Unacceptable that a hotel of this caliber would not have ocean views, when it’s right on the Cliff Walk. The saddest part is they have amazing ocean views, but leave it completely unused for lunch. We were very disappointed.

The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, but the rooms, especially the bathrooms, are quite outdated. We had a pleasant experience during our weekend visit, but the management was quite rude and unfriendly. They acted as if we were lucky to be able to pay $2000 a night to stay at their hotel. The staff, on the other hand, was fantastic. The rooms are in need of renovation, and the lobby is chaotic and doesn’t align with the Newport theme.

It is such a lovely setting and the public areas are charming and intimate, but choose your room well, they have specific issues that should be addressed when booking this property.

I am fortunate to stay in luxurious hotels around the world. The Chanler is among the best boutique hotels anywhere, and in my opinion, the best in the northeastern U.S. I have visited twice and will do so again. I highly recommend The Chanler to my family and friends.

My husband and I just returned from a 3-night stay at The Chanler at Cliff Walk. Our stay was fabulous as was the staff, the Spiced Pear Restaurant and our room. It is located perfectly at the beginning of Cliff Walk and has great access to all the mansions. We have used Luxury Link many times and our stay at The Chanler was one of our best. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone!
