Lake Placid Lodge

We went for our 40th anniversary, and it was perfect.

Great location and most staff very friendly. General property buildings are dated and in need of update. Several cabins had missing or rotted trim and/or siding. Our cabin had an active leak while there. I was comp’d $199.75 for this inconvenience. Fireplace as well had joint cracks along face of fireplace. Just overall dated. The restaurant was the biggest disappointment in terms of minimal offerings and expensive for quantity and overall taste of product. Had lobster bisque which was $24 and consisted of maybe 4oz of maybe broth with very little taste. The lamb was good but for the price nothing special and had better food out. Overall, the price vs offering does not warrant a return for us.

I have fished in northern Manitoba 38 of the past 40 years and have fished at 18 different lodges. I rate lodges from 1 to 10, 10 being the best, based on the quality and quantity of fish, the condition of the equipment, the condition of cabins and lodges, the quality of the food and sometimes a few miscellaneous items. My wife, daughter, family friend and myself fished Silsby Lake Lodge June 10 to June 15, 2026. We range in age from 51 to 77. Here is how we ranked Silsby Lake lodge; Fishing Quality While we were there Northern Pike accounted for 99% of the fish caught. Walleye were only caught by accident. There are no lake trout or other species. On several days we only caught 5 Pike. Others at the lodge had slightly better luck. In fairness the weather did not help. Fishing Rating: 3 Equipment The boats at Silsby are terrible. They are at least 8-10 years old. One of our boats was so water logged it could not reach plane. The seats do not have springs so rough water is painful. The motors were fine. The rods and reels were fine. Equipment Rating: 3 Cabins We had two cabins. The first had 1 toilet and 3 bedrooms. Two of the bedrooms had doors which did not close and 1 had no door at all. Awkward since I was the only male. Both cabins had the same issues. They were filthy. Spider webs and spiders throughout. No hot water for 3 days. Trash was emptied once during our 5-day visit. The floor was never swept. Linen, sheets and towels were never replaced. Equipment such as refrigerators and microwaves did not work. The porches had leaks which prevented them of being any use. The cabins were the worst I have seen in 40 years. Cabin Rating: 0 Main Lodge On the second day the camp generator died and was never on again. So, no electricity to the camp, no lights in the cabin. Our room had a diesel heater in the middle of the cabin between the two beds and the bathroom, so a very dangerous situation at night. Sam, the lodge owner, did a Herculean job using portable generators to ensure the cabins had running water for the toilets. The Main lodge had 3 sections, the entrance, eating area and kitchen. The entrance had the TV and a PC. It was also the area where the guides congregated to smoke and watch TV. We could not use it due to the smoke. The kitchen was also acceptable except that to get to the bathroom you had to walk through the kitchen and since there were no lights you had to leave the door open when peeing. Main Lodge Rating: 4 Food We found the food quality acceptable with some noticeable supply issues. There was no milk for coffee during our stay. There was no fruit juice, instead there was Tang. I didn’t know Tang even existed anymore! On some days no pancakes or French Toast. Not a big deal but again given the cost an annoyance. Food Rating: 4 Staff Quality Sam, the owner was a great guy and very visible, however, once we lost electricity, he failed to keep us informed as to what was going on. He did answer questions. The cook was excellent; her support staff were terrible. Food and plates were left on tables overnight. For 5 days every meal had some type of small error (scrambled eggs instead of over easy as ordered, no home fries as ordered, missing soup or toast and so forth). They did nothing in the main lodge or cabins for 5 days. The guides, as with most camps, were hit or miss. Some kept headphones on, some smoked pot all day, some were just lazy and a very few were exceptional. Staff Quality: 3 Miscellaneous Items. After a heavy rain the runway turns to mud and the planes cannot land. They have to land at another lodge that has a gravel runway and ferry you over by float plane. Next the runway is not on the same island as the lodge. You land and get on school bus for a ride to a mud field. You walk through the mud to the dock, load the boats and have about a 10-15 minute ride to the camp. If warned we would have had on our rain gear and waterproof boots. We had neither as therefore arrived at the camp wet and muddy. Our return flight was also problematic. There were two planes returning to Winnipeg. It is advertised as a direct flight. The first plane took everyone but my wife, daughter and myself. It took them about 1 ½ hours to Winnipeg. The plane we were on was much smaller and slower. On the return It had to stop to refuel. It took us about 3 ½ hours to get back to Winnipeg. Final Rating: 2 Our overall rating is confusing; There were men in camp for the 5th consecutive year. The conditions did not seem to bother some of them. Perhaps it did not bother them to sleep with spiders on dirty sheets. Others were like us and will never return. Silsby ranks next to last of the 18 lodges I have fished. The last one in ranking is already out of business.

Quality Everywhere! The staff was very kind and willing to help whenever and where ever they could.The grounds were very nicely done.We especially liked the flower and shrub beds.
