Wine Tasting at Boschendal

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 days ago

My family and I spent the day at Boschendal wine estate in Franschoek. 100/10 experience! 🌷 Boschendal is filled with magic and beauty. We did a wine tasting there and had so much fun! 🤩 our server was well informed and had such a fun energy about him that added to our great experience 🥰 We enjoyed our time there, walking around the estate and browsing through the little shops in the estate. I would recommend bringing comfortable walking shoes as you walk around a lot as there is plenty to see and do there.

Disappointing and boring

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

Checked in to the Retreat cottages-TV was not working. A satellite dish is used. They fiddled with the TV on and off for almost 2 hours from 8pm until almost 10pm. Was told they would take a look next morning and it would be sorted while we were at breakfast. Returned from breakfast and nothing was sorted. We also heard our neighbours clearly through the door which made for a noisy and restless evening. Long story short, TV was not sorted at all and our entire first night and second day was wasted- we were only moved to another unit at 2pm. They offered a token of apology, but what left a poor taste was the haggling by the Guest relations manager on Day 2, in relation to something offered by the first manager on Day 1. If you cannot provide something as basic as a functional TV during rainy days, and frustratingly leave your guests in limbo for a night and half a day, ruining their time, you should be doing everything you can to compensate for it. When it rains, the Treehouse is great for the children, and my kids loved the lady who looked after them. However, there is absolutely nothing for adults to do when it rains. No spa. No fitness centre. Was so bored on the second day that I booked a spa day at Sante retreat, which was absolutely the highlight of an otherwise boring and frustrating stay at Boschendal. On the second evening, the power kept being cut in our unit and we were woken up at 2am and throughout the night by power rebooting. Spoke to the guest relations manager who promised us feedback by today but who has now ghosted us. Boschendal been on my bucket list for some time; it is highly overrated and nothing justifies the fee charged. So many better options in the Western Cape.

Disappointed

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We stayed at Boschendal on our garden route trip. Such nice staff but it really is a big commercial enterprise. Everything is money money money. You cannot set up a room tab so have to pay each time. Having just come from a 5 star hotel this felt 3 star. Disappointed.

Could be better

⸻ Boschendal Retreat Cottages Overall: Disappointing stay with highlights, but not aligned with the price point. Arrival: We arrived around 22:00 (which had been communicated in advance), but reception was pitch dark with no staff available. After waiting about 15 minutes, we eventually accessed our cottage Unfortunately, it was cold, dark, and unwelcoming-far from the expected arrival experience. Accommodation: The two-bedroom cottage is spacious but quite sparsely equipped. Soundproofing is poor-neighbours are very close, and noise travels easily through thin walls. Bathroom basins are impractically small, causing water to splash everywhere, although the showers are large with good pressure. Amenities felt limited for the level advertised-no cotton pads, earbuds, or shower cap. Coffee pods were generic, and the welcome offering consisted of a few apples. At this price point, something more thoughtful like a bottle of estate wine would have been appreciated. Housekeeping: This was the biggest letdown. Service was inconsistent and below standard. Despite requesting an early clean, our room was only serviced after 13:00. Cups were left uncleaned, and overall attention to detail was lacking. The evening “refresh” was particularly disappointing: curtains left open, the cottage left dark, and windows open. Overall, the weakest housekeeping we’ve experienced. Catering: Breakfast was a highlight, beautifully presented with fresh, high-quality ingredients. Eggs were excellent, and the pastries were especially good. Service here was relaxed and friendly. Sleep Quality: Linen and pillows were acceptable and fresh, but the rooms were noticeably cold, which impacted comfort. Final Thoughts: While the estate itself offers fantastic activities and a beautiful setting, the accommodation experience doesn’t currently justify the price. There’s clear potential, but improvements in management, comfort, and especially housekeeping consistency are needed. Would we return? Probably not at this price point—there are stronger alternatives in the Winelands offering better overall value and service.

The Werf farm Picnics

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 months ago

We've done quite a few picnics along the years, and I must say that this one is in the Top 3. I was impressed by the organisation. You come to the tented area, they give you the blanket and backrest and let you chose your spot. Once settled down, they come place your drink order, and bring you your picnic baskets. We ordered a standard one and a vegetarian one. everything was explained and all the food restrictions were taken into account. Well done! The food variety was large, and the quantity as well. Very good quality products. We sat in front of the carousel to enjoy the band. It was not really my style of music (I prefer acoustic), but it was enjoyable. Top notch service. The price is a bit expensive, but you pay for the quality. To be done on a special occasion. The low part was the portable toilets. I found it a bit inappropriate for such a high standard place.
