Reviews for Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel

This hotel deserves its high rating

We absolutely loved this hotel. The staff are all very welcoming and most speak fantastic English (not a given in Peru) and will also help with not so great Spanish! The welcome at the station was very warm and immediately you felt looked after with luggage portered and placed in your room. It is close to the bus stops and the town so great access to Machu Picchu and to wander the shops, markets and restaurants of Aguas Calientes, which is a lovely little town to visit in its own right. The hotel is warm, bright, comfortable and very well appointed. The bar is well stocked and the food is fantastic. We ate dinner and breakfast and both were superb. The restaurant had both a gluten free and lactose free menu (first for our trip) and everyone was very well versed in food allergies etc. More than that, they were extremely accommodating. Last but not least - the view and sound of the river outside your window is completely mesmerising. We were even greeted by a hummingbird in the tree outside our window this morning! One of the nicest hotels I have stayed in and I have stayed in world renowned ones - this has its own lovely charm and I wouldn’t hesitate to come back.

We stayed 4 nites at this hotel and we all were very happy with the accommodations, breakfast and all the staff. I must give individual recognition to Daniel, who I believe is the hotel manager. Upon check in my wife and I were put in a really small, uncomfortable room. Asking the front desk if there was any way to change the room I was told that she had to contact her manager and we should expect a response in the morning. About 30 minutes later Daniel came to our room to not only look it over (and he agreed with us about the room) but he also offered to show us another room that evening that might be more to our liking. He showed us a very nice room that met our needs and offered to move us that very evening. Daniel could not have been more professional, caring and empathetic. Each day he greeted us to see if there was anything he could do to help us or improve our stay at this hotel. I would like to personally thank Daniel for saving our stay at the SUMAQ and making our trip to Aguascaliente truly memorable. Thank you Daniel. Muchas gracias mi amigo.

Wonderful experience

An absolutely fantastic experience staying at this hotel, from the greeting at the train station through to our final lunch before leaving on the train back to Cusco. We booked a tour of Machu Picchu through the Sumaq Hotel, and it was the highlight of our vacation for our entire family, from teenagers to grandparents. We were met at the train station by Jonathan, who had everything organized, from all the required tickets, personal guidance to the boarding of the bus to the top, as well as looking after bags that we could leave with the hotel to pick up later. At the top, our guide Anna was amazing, and really went above and beyond. She knows her history, and is a great storyteller. Truly, both Jonathan and Anna were great.”, and we can’t say enough good things about them. At the end of the tour, we had an amazing lunch at the hotel, our best meal of the trip. All our meals at the hotel were fantastic, in fact, including dinner, breakfast and another lunch the next day. We didn’t want to eat anywhere else. The room was quite comfortable and our family of four were able to relax in a triple room, with space for everyone.

Gorgeous Stay in the heart of Aguas Clientes

The hotel is so close to Machu Picchu you can see the mountains from your room. The staff was extremely helpful, especially Johnny. We had a small Arac Masin ceremony to celebrate our anniversary. Worth it! The shaman and decorations were on point, traditional clothing and flowers included. The food throughout our stay was delicious! The only reason this is a 4 not a 5 is that we had an accounting issue where the hotel double charged us an excessive amount for prepaid scheduled activities. We had to spend much of our time with the concierge unraveling what amounted to a paper work error. They finally made it right, but it did put a damper on things.

Wedding Anniversary Celebration

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 days ago

We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary here as our base for a trip to Machu Picchu. We loved Aguas Calientes so much, and I’m so glad we chose to have our anniversary celebration at Sumaq. They made our anniversary very special with a shaman ceremony and a fabulous dinner with wine pairings after a day at Machu Picchu. Milagros (“Luz”) was the star of the show, she provided 5* service. Highly recommend!
