Reviews for The Oberoi Amarvilas, Agra

The only place to stay in Agra

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

This is the second time I have stayed in this hotel. Despite always wanting to try new hotels, there was no disputing where we were going to stay, this time when we returned to Agra, some twelve years later with children. The hotel is still as breathtaking even now. Waking up to views of the Taj Mahal from your bed is something incredibly special. The landscaping is simply stunning. Service is top dollar as it is throughout the Oberoi group. Nothing is too much trouble. One evening after dinner, the chef, upon hearing my daughter was a keen baker, came out and gave her a private tour of the kitchens, showing her everything from where they created chocolate Easter eggs and Taj Mahal's to where they made the naan bread. It was fascinating and made her feel very special. The only criticism, is that on one day large group turned up at breakfast time which made it incredibly busy and staff struggled to cope. I gave up waiting for my breakfast that day, which was a shame. Perhaps the hotel should review this. However, in all it was an excellent experience.

the hotel is spectacular on its own but the location and view of Taj Mahal from every room takes it to another level. if you can afford definitely consider The Oberoi Amarvilas for your Agra visit, even if only for one night.

Disappointing stay, unpleasant « surprise »

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 days ago

The location is beautiful and the rooms are clean but it’s been a very disappointing stay. When we arrived we carried our precious belongings in a bag, a staff member asked if they could take it to our room with our luggages after scanning it through security check. We thought we could trust the hotel with our belongings since we never had any issue before, but that was a huge mistake…. Someone took all of our money from this bag, 800€ and left about 40€ as if we would not notice… this happened on the way between the entry and our room. We wanted to put our belongings in the safe deposit box and realized the money was gone. We contacted the front desk and were able to talk with the general manager, sir Mohit Malhotra, that was more than unpleasant exchanging about this topic to. He told us they looked at the security cameras (which do not cover every area in the hotel) but our bag was already open when we arrived. Excuse me?? I explained that the bag never left the car, and was never left unwatched, I was sick during the ride to the hotel and the only reason why the bag was left open was because I had to take medicine repeatedly. My other bag was not open when we arrived yet someone also went through what was inside as I found my pouches half open and belongings not where I had placed them. The only thing he offered was his support if we wanted to signal anything to the police station but it would have been useless and a loss of time since we had to leave the very next day, he made absolutely no commercial gesture towards us. And using the open bag as an excuse felt very disrespectful and it is not an excuse to stealing. The hotel manager ended up offering us one meal to our stay (about 27/30€) after asking us if we had a good stay…. And talking about all this story over again. In the end it is not about the money that has been taken also it was a huge amount, it is about the ways/manners. Something like this never happened to us in a luxury establishment before. We were good Oberoi customers and were sure we could have trust in Oberoi and their staff but we are more than disappointed by such disgraceful manners and it gives a very bad image to the establishment. Furthermore, also the rooms were clean, the restaurants were not, there were grease stains on placemats, my fork tines were crooked, there were crumbs on the chairs and we even found an extra dirty napkin under our table…. The restaurant was also very noisy/loud in the evening, it was very hard to have a conversation as we were unable to hear each other well. Some parts of the hotel were under renovation as well … and overall it felt like the Amarvilas lost of its prestige to the profite of tourism. It’s a pity.

Wonderful experience

We spent two nights at the hotel, and it was magical. Great atmosphere, food and service. We had a full day & half day tour to see the main sights, and our guide Muzammil was fantastic - very knowledgable, flexible and patient with our shopping.
