Living Large/ or Having it Wide as the Dutch say

We planned the crème de la crème, once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Netherlands to see the tulips and celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. Amstel Intercontinental Hotel is the one place that exceeded our expectations. Want to have James Bond pick you up at the airport? Let the concierge team arrange a private transfer and you will be met by a Mercedes and if you’re lucky Tony will be your driver. Are you arriving in the morning after sitting on a plane for 10 hours? No problem; Emmet or Marcus will store your luggage while you shower and stretch out at the pool until your room is ready. The G.M.,Rudolf van Dijk was aware that this was an extraordinary occasion for us so a personal note and a tremendous vase of tulips greeted us when we got to our room. The excellent staff seemed to have been given a heads up that we were special guest as they outdid themselves to make our stay unforgettable. Jenna brought a bowl of fresh fruit in the afternoon and Denise came in the evening with delicious macaroons so we never left our luxurious room that 1st day. The next morning at breakfast we observed that every guest was given the royal treatment. Old World elegance is still an available at the Amstel Intercontinental Hotel.

I do not recommend staying in this hotel

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 days ago

I do not recommend staying in this hotel because The level of the hotel and the service is bad compared to the price of the room, as the air conditioning was not cooling , the management couldn’t solve the problem, they put 2 fans instead of fixing the problem

Excellent high tea @ The Amstel

A high quality High Tea in a beautiful setting! Food and teas are superb. The pairing of the teas and food really hits the spot. All is well executed with fresh highly tasteful food. The tea itself is steeped perfectly. The service is excellent, all the staff is very welcoming and hospitable. The view over the Amstel river is to die for! An absolute amazing experience!

Never again!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 weeks ago

What a terrible let down! Based on reviews I had read, I was looking forward to my stay for one night, en route to Paris from Amsterdam, after arriving at Schipol in the morning. Let me start with the positives. The staff are really professional and friendly, and the pillows are very comfortable. That is the end of the positives. I had booked a junior suite, for more than one thousand euros for one night. Not cheap. No breakfast included. My wife and I met a family member for lunch on our arrival, having booked at the hotel restaurant. We ordered three burgers. After an interminable wait, they eventually arrived. At best, they were mediocre. Not at all juicy, with very little spicing, if any, but at an eye watering cost. But the staff were friendly, despite appearing overwhelmed by trying to deal with the lunch time trade. During lunch, we were informed that our suite was ready. Hooray! Off we trooped, with high expectations, only to be disappointed by a suite that was, at best, poky, spartan, and tired looking, in desperate need of refurbishment. Very dated. However, the worst was yet to come. We had arranged to meet friends for drinks at the hotel bar that evening. On our arrival at the very small bar, we were overwhelmed by piercing laughter and loud conversation from a group of overly excited women, which was so bad that having a quiet conversation with our friends would clearly be impossible. We were told that there was no other venue in the hotel suitable for an evening aperitif, which I was gobsmacked to hear, from a hotel of this supposed stature. It was the bar, or nothing. So, we decamped to a nearby bistro, for a pleasant evening, with manageable acoustics and prices that were dramatically lower than the Amstel. Returning to our room, and preparing for sleep, we were taken aback to hear loud thumping music emanating from below, from an engagement party on the ground floor, according to what we were told the next morning. Luckily, I had earplugs with me, otherwise sleep would have been impossible. This ruckus continued well into the night. On checking out the next morning, I informed the staff member about the incident. To his credit, he apologised, and offered us breakfast on the house, which we declined. In summary, I think that the Amstel Intercontinental is over-priced, dated, lacks basic amenities, such as a decent hairdryer in the bathroom, and very few charging ports, as well as being poorly managed, given the hosting of noisy functions in close proximity of guest rooms, which make a peaceful night's sleep absolutely impossible. At very least, guests should be warned of this. Had I known about the disco downstairs at the engagement party beforehand, I would have cancelled my reservation. Next time I visit Amsterdam, this hotel will definitely not be on my list. Never again. .

Great service at Dinner

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

We were 2 couples and we have a table for 4 with a very nice view in front of the Amstel River. We were welcomed by George, he treat us very very well: excellent service, kind, with nice advices and with the smile :). About the dinner, i took the seasonal 3 courses menu. I’m allergic with fish so they let me change my starter for the nice smoke duck beast.Everything was good ! I am gourmand so I also wanted to try their sides such as the bread basket with mushroom butter and the fruites uit zuyd with truffle mayonnaise. Both were delicious !! I can only recommand you to try it. To sum up : nice environment, good staff and nice food. Restaurant was a pleasure, I wish one day I can have the pleasure to sleep in the Hotel.
