Elegance in Africa

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

Old world elegance in Africa. Altus is knowledgeable and must know everyone in that part of the World! Baraka was kind enough to explain coffee growing to the 3 of us and terrific in the dining room. A beautiful building, lovely grounds and comfortable beds are nothing without the people and The Manor provides it all!

Beautiful Setting, service just okay

This was our third stop of five during our safari in Tanzania. The Manor and surrounding grounds are simply gorgeous. Our room was huge, clean, and beautiful. The bathtub was incredible and a welcome option on a cold night. That was about it for the positives (for us) I'm afraid. While the service was good, it somehow felt forced and we got the distinct feeling that the workers there are not happy. I felt sorry for them the be honest. The food, while beautiful, was just okay and lacked flavor. We were with a group of 8 and all of us were a bit disappointed. Most disappointing was the temperature of our room. It gets very cold at the top of the crater at night (especially in June) and our room was absolutely freezing. The heated floor in the bathroom did not work (everyone else in our group said theirs did not work either). There is no heat in the room except for a fireplace, and while it was lit while were were at dinner, it was still freezing in our room and our room ended up filling with smoke. All of our clothes reeked of smoke. Our room never did heat up, they ended up bringing us space heaters which we appreciated, but we were still cold all night and did not get much sleep. I think we would try somewhere else if we were to return to this area. Nothing felt authentic here.

Magical place

This is an amazing a magical place. We have extensive safari lodge in experience having lived in Kenya but this is one of favorite ones. So great it’s located outside the Ngorongoro conservation area and not cramped with other hotels inside. Yet 15-20 mins to the gate of the crater. Lots to do - long walks and runs in the coffee plantation, spa, pool, coffee tour, horse riding, croquet… we loved hanging out in the billiards lounge and watching movie in our own private theater!! Rooms are amazing Cape Dutch style with lovely balconies and very private. The team under Basil are very attentive and Musa who was our butler was great. Peter our guide was knowledgeable and was not over bearing. Great safari vehicles for the Crater. One of the best safaris we had given the concentration of animals. Every meal was a tasting which small enough that you don’t feel like you over eat. Very healthy and vegetarian options are available. It’s the small things about this place - lovely rosemary infused both prepared when we arrived back for our safari, varied kids menu, a fire every night lit in our room. We are incredibly spoiled in Kenya but this was one of the best experiences we have had in the region!

Wonderful visit to the Manor!

Visited the Manor for a three night stay including game drive to NgoroNgoro crater. What a fabulous place! It’s located on the foothills of the Ngoro Ngoro conservation area in the midst of a coffee plantation (I recommend the 30min tour to learn more about arabica coffee!) Great food (beautifully plated 5 course menu). Moussa was our always smiling, always ready “butler” for the stay that made sure everything was “Hakuna Matata”. Rooms are large enough for an extra bed for our daughter and features a fireplace lit very night if you wish. Peter our driver and guide to the crater was very knowledgeable and attentive to our needs and set up a fully appointed bush lunch including silverware and freshly brewed coffee to finish a glorious game drive. Final point, wine list features the best of South African wines and should satisfy to the most discerning palette. Big compliments to the Manor team under Basil, best in class!

THE MANOR!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 months ago

This place was so great. Despite the long drive (maybe 15 minutes) on the dirt road off the main road, we loved our stay at The Manor at Ngorongoro. When we arrived, Christina, one of the managers, gave us a tour. There are several buildings, but there was a main building that had the dining room, bar, library, gift shop, etc. The beautiful grounds included a garden with vegetables and herbs, a generous stable with horses, and a pool area. Our beautiful and comfortable rooms were in a standalone house, one of several standalone dwellings. Our room had 2 large bedrooms on the first floor (each with its own bathroom) and a children's area upstairs. The chef prepared lovely meals and we ate in the equally lovely dining room. And, of course, the real stare of the show was the Ngorongoro Crater and our OUTSTANDING guide, Elissa. It is really difficult to describe the experience and [our] photographs really didn't do it justice. The topography, the landscapes, the animals...we loved it so much!
