In the fashion of a traditional Balinese village â€" with the addition of modern luxuries, of course â€" the tranquil Alila Ubud resort helps to center mind, body and spirit. Its stunning architecture captures contemporary design philosophy while incorporating traditional elements of style. Cradled along the banks of the Ayung River within lush Balinese foothills, guests retreat into a collection of the resort's chic rooms and freestanding, stilt-supported villas. The juxtaposition of contrasting elements creates a uniquely timeless feel, with contemporary concrete appointments beneath conventional thatched roofs, or modern terrazzo tiles beside aged and crushed rock. Expect all the lavish comforts of an exclusive resort, like private terraces and clandestine courtyards, open-air bathrooms and airy showers, private plunge pools and secluded sundecks, to name a few.

We choose this hotel because of its iconic pool, and it is really iconic, no doubt. And surrounded by jungle, the area is spectacular. But that is the hotel's only plus point. The room is small, and only has the basic furniture. 1 chair in a double room, and 1 small closet. The shower and bathtub are outdoors in a walled internal courtyard, which is nice. The daily service of the room is terrible. A small hair left in the sink is still there in the evening, so the sink has not been cleaned. An empty shampoo bottle left in the shower is not taken away. There is nowhere to go so you must have all the meals in the hotel. Food is average at expensive prices (comparing to local prices, it is still cheap to Western standards) and the restaurant staff constantly tries to upsell you to a point where it is annoying. As an example, they ask if you want water, and we said "still", and they came with 2 large bottles of still water, opened both so they could charge us for 2 bottles. Going anywhere is a challenge, the local Gojek app (local Uber) offers limited possibilities. The hotel terribly overcharges if you ask them for a taxi. As an example, we asked them for a taxi to Ubud, 6.5 km, and they charged the same rate as what we paid from Denpassar airport to get to the hotel (40 km). They rip you off with a smile. Bottom line, this hotel is definitely not luxury, and not worth the 5 stars they claim.

A lovely experience in the heart of nature where the sound of nature is loudest of them all. Grateful for this stay and looking forward to another one.

Such mixed feelings about this hotel. So I will write pros and cons; Pros Staff are wonderful and so so helpful Setting is very unique and beautiful. You really are in the middle of nature The pools are amazing Rooms with sunken bathtubs are pretty cool Food is delicious Great location to get out and explore bali - rice paddy fields, waterfalls, etc You can hire a driver through reception, we did, his name was Newman and he was absolutely brilliant. Cons I never knew nature could be so deafening. The creatures/animals were so loud all day and all night. Some of them sounded like a car alarm going off, not kidding. The monkeys can be naughty and steal your food from the resturant, this happened to us The rooms are not properly sealed with gaps everywhere, including big gaps under the door. As as result of this all sorts of creatures will come into your room whether you like it or not. This includes the usual bugs like spider, etc but also means lizards can freely come in and out of your room. We did not realise this the first night. We nievely thought the room was sealed better than it was. But the second night just as we were going to bed we spotted huge lizards and spiders in our room. Maintenance came out and they were fantastic with dealing with them, but I suspect its a bit of a PR stunt as they know your room will be filled with all the creatures hiding in all the crevices. When we checked out the next day we woke to more lizards on the ceiling and we could see lizard poo on the floor of our room. We also got woken in the night to the sound of lizards falling from the ceiling which wasn't exactly relaxing. Perhaps we are just the wrong clientele for this hotel, but as we booked a 5 star hotel we thought we would be sealed off from nature at night-time, and able to get a good nights sleep, but that is not the case here. Such a shame as the staff, location, food was perfect, but we barely slept, and dreaded going back to the room and turning the lights off at night time.

As soon as we arrived felt relaxed surrounded by jungle and the sounds of the jungle. Checking was fast and the staff were lovely. Our room was very comfortable and had everything we needed. The outdoor bath and rain shower was wonderful. Breakfast was very good with different menu choices every day from Western to Balinese dishes. Both restaurants on the property served good quality food. The yoga classes on Sunday and Wednesday was great because the resort is very isolated and because of the traffic travelling to a yoga studio was stressful. The wild monkeys were a wonderful distraction and fun to watch. I would highly recommend Alila for anyone who wants to unwind and wants peace for a few days.
