excellent experience from arrival to check-out. Service was consistently attentive but never intrusive. Leo was quick to help with luggage and local information, and small requests were handled efficiently and with a genuine sense of hospitality.

Grand Premier Suite on a ‘Peninsula Time’ 3 for 2-night offer was superb

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

We booked a Grand Premier Suite on a ‘Peninsula Time’ 3 for 2-night offer which included breakfast, early (after 6 am) and late checkouts. We were given a fabulous suite that was approximately 1100 sq feet. It included a separate cloakroom (toilet), lounge, study, dining and bedroom areas. There was a spacious dressing room with its own dressing table. The bathroom was spacious with a large bath and shower. The décor was high end with a fantastically comfortable bed. The room facilities such as lights and blinds are operated by touch panels which take a bit of time to get used to. The rate included breakfast which was very good although we would have liked some fruit salad as the fruits were mainly provided whole. The options were decent and catered to most international preferences. The service was amongst the best we have come across to kudos to the food and beverage teams. The concierge and door service were also of a very high professional standard as was the reception staff. The hotel is in a good location close to the Wangfujing shopping area. There are three restaurant offerings, the Jing (French) and Huang Ting (Cantonese) and the Lobby Bar/Restaurant which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner/snacks. We ended up dining all 3 nights in the Lobby. This was due to the other ‘Fine dining’ restaurants missing the mark for us. They were both located in the basement and appeared empty and uninviting. The French menu was mainly offal based which neither of us eat and both restaurants are extremely expensive. The prices would set you back north of £300 without drinks which is just too high and seemed to be for most people given the only busy restaurant was the Lobby. The service in the Lobby restaurant was excellent and the food, although a limited menu was well executed and tasty. The portions were on the small side but are served with a complimentary bread basket. The cocktail menu was a bit limited but fairly priced. Wine is expensive. We felt the ambiance in the Lobby dining area could have been improved in the evenings with some candles on the table. We really enjoyed our stay at the hotel. The service is impeccable and the room was fantastic. For the price we paid it was outstanding. We did feel the dining options need reviewing to be a bit more affordable with cuisine that is a bit more appealing to the average diner. The only other negative was the lack of any seating in the lobby. Waiting in the lobby requires standing which is poor for a 5 star hotel. Sitting in the Lobby restaurant whilst waiting for taxis/transport or tour guides gives staff the impression you are looking to dine.

Convenient location and cosy rooms

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 months ago

We stayed 5 nights in 2 rooms during our family trip to Beijing. The rooms are cosy and well maintained. Great Cantonese cuisine and tea selection at Phoenix Court. Good selection of cuisine at breakfast including fresh dumplings and pancakes. 10-15 mins walk to popular restaurants along Jingyu hutong and the Wangfujing shopping district.

A disappointing experience that fell short of Peninsula standards

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 months ago

Our stay at The Peninsula Beijing was, regrettably, disappointing—particularly as we arrived directly from The Peninsula Shanghai, which had set an exceptionally high benchmark for luxury, service, and overall experience. While we came with high expectations based on the Peninsula brand and our outstanding Shanghai stay, the Beijing property did not meet those expectations and felt noticeably dated by comparison. There were several areas of concern during our stay: • Room condition and cleanliness were below the standard expected of a luxury hotel. Most concerning was discovering a dead cockroach in the room, which was genuinely distressing and unacceptable at this level of accommodation. • Hot water issues were persistent. It regularly took around 15 minutes for the shower water to heat up, meaning the first person to shower was often left with cold water. • In-room dining was inconsistent—some meals were enjoyable, while others missed the mark. • Breakfast followed a semi-buffet format that was limited but adequate; however, service issues did arise, including mixed-up double orders on one occasion. • After in-room dining trays were cleared, the table was not wiped down, and we had to clean it ourselves one day. • We also found used teacups and teapots from the previous day left uncollected and unwashed, which further added to the sense of oversight. • We participated in the dumpling-making class with our children. While the staff running the activity were warm and lovely, the experience felt overpriced, and our hands-on involvement was more limited than what was advertised and anticipated. On a positive note, the staff themselves were consistently polite and kind, and the concierge team was genuinely helpful and proactive. They assisted us in organising a private tour to the Great Wall, which was excellent and one of the highlights of our Beijing visit. Unfortunately, despite these positives, the overall experience did not align with what we associate with the Peninsula brand. Given our experience, we would not return to this property nor recommend it, especially when compared to the exceptional standard set by other Peninsula hotels. This review is shared in the spirit of constructive feedback, with the hope that meaningful improvements can be made to bring the Beijing property back in line with the excellence the brand is known for.
