I stayed with my girlfriend at So Sofitel from 15th to 20th April. This hotel is a mixed bag. We stayed in one of the Beach Villas with direct access to the beach. Good things first. The Beach Villa room is nice, it does show some age, but in general it is good. Bathroom is large and nice, good shower, nice toilet room albeit not very private for those who likes that. Good closet space for girls who bring a lot of clothes or boys for that matter. The bedroom area is also good, the bed itself I would say is comfortable and you sleep well in it. The big positive of living in the beach villa is however the private terrace with direct straight line access to the beach. This is what made the whole experience in our opinion. The terrace has direct view over the beach and the water, it is lovely. The beach itself is superb, nice sand on the medium softness level I would say. The sea is warm, it is shallow and the seabed is mostly soft sand with some scattered reef around. All in all the room and private areas are very good, we were very happy with that. Noise was low, occupancy was low only 47% apparently. The hotel areas are in general acceptable. It is lush and tropical, and I would say it is clean overall. It is a strange layout with the reception far away from the arrival car park. So golfcarts are used for transport... hotel has a spa which is usable and we did use it once, it is rather expensive I would say though. Staff is friendly and helpful. There are some things that are not so good though. It is marketed as a 5 star hotel. I find it strange that a 5 star hotel do not offer room service. We were not super happy with the turnaround service in terms of changing sheets and get the room swept (impossible to not bring sand back into the room, it happens). Sheets were only changed once during our stay which while not massive it was still slightly annoying with sand and stuff getting into the bedsheets. Bins were not emptied until after we pointed it out. When water was requested it took 2-3 hours for it to be delivered to the room. The food is not up to the level you would expect. There is a buffet which is hit and miss. One of the restaurants were closed during our stay, but the other which was basically just the bar opposite the buffet was open, but served the same menu during the entirety of our stay. Clearly the hotel expects most people to go half board and eat for free in the buffet. Fair gamble, but then the buffet has to deliver day in and day out which we would say it did not do. The breakfast options were good though, although my girlfriend pointed out that the omelette people ignored simple request and just put all options in the omelette despite being told clearly what to put in... a bit weird. Drinks are not good. All drinks taste the same really and they like to make them strong. To conclude we were happy with our stay. But I have to point out this was only because of the room itself and the privacy of the outside area, the view and access to the beach. We both agreed that had we opted for one of the smaller standard rooms with garden views further in on the hotel area we would have left the hotel feeling unhappy with the stay. The room and beach was the thing that made the difference. If staying at this hotel I would simply encourage anyone to pay up for the Beach Villa, it is worth it and will make your stay much more enjoyable. Hope this was helpful.
