Reviews for The Ritz-Carlton, Abama

Excellent 5* luxury experience

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 days ago

We felt that this resort was excellent, from the superb Villa bedrooms, luxurious pool environment, superb service from the ladies and gentlemen of the Ritz Carlton as well as the excellent range of dining options including the amazing MB restaurant. Overall, one of the best stays we have enjoyed for many years and we look forward to returning in the future!

Definitely stay in one of the villas as you are then a member of the villa club which is well worth it for adults

Beautiful hotel it has changed since we last went. Stayed in one of the villa rooms which was large and comfortable. They have obviously done up the rooms but sadly left a rug under the bed which surrounded the bed which was cream hard on the feet and dirty. Beautiful pools which the villas have access too. Nowhere to hang your wet swimming wear outside on the balcony needed a small wall rack. Sadly attacked by black flies which bite. The hotel is surrounded by banana plants which had been sprayed. The flies bite my poor husband is covered with very itchy bites. It’s not the hotels fault but be aware! I doubt I will go back unless I hear the fly situation is sorted it did spoil our holiday. Staff were amazing polite and helpful. Very good restaurant s but recommend booking as we could get into some of the restaurants.

This Ritz needs to improve

The resort was nice. Great views and a lovely spa. Most of the staff was lovely as well. There were some major problems. Flies everywhere! By the pool, near the food it was not good. Why wouldn’t the hotel spray daily some repellant? It was terrible. Non enjoyable for most of the time since pool time was key for this trip. Lastly - the service needs to improve. They were slow at times and missed the drink orders. They need more staff.

Flies, flies, flies….and a huge private function

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

Not the hotel’s fault but it was plagued by black biting flies during our stay. Staff mentioned the neighbouring banana plantations as a factor. One staff member said her friend was in hospital with an infected bite. They seem to be attracted to some people more than others - my husband was very badly affected and left looking like he had a bad dose of chicken pox - every inch of his body was covered in bites, despite using so much inspect repellant we had to take a taxi to the pharmacy to buy more (the hotel gift shop having run out!) They can even bite through clothing. There are citronella candles in the restaurants but not enough for every table. As a result we won’t risk returning as it severely impacted our holiday. The second issue was that the hotel was largely taken over for several days by a huge private convention which meant on their first night the hotel bar was totally rammed with nowhere to sit. We tried to buy drinks but were turned away and told “they weren’t included” because the staff, who all seemed very stressed by the chaos, thought we were part of the group who clearly had a package deal. The next day the main hotel pool was closed to anyone not in the group as they were enjoying a lavish pool party with inflatables, balloons and a buffet. The night after that the hotel bar was closed to anyone not in the group. We stayed in a villa and for the first couple of days we enjoyed delicious snacks served by the villa pool (spring rolls, mini hamburgers, cakes), but the day before and during the convention the kitchen was clearly too busy preparing their buffets and the quality of our food dropped off a cliff. Instead we were offered ice pops, mini lollies and apples proffered from a big plastic crate. The hotel obviously take a commercial decision to accept the large group functions on the basis it is worth giving a few complimentary drinks to fob off the other guests who are inconvenienced. It is very obvious where the hotels priority lies during these events and it certainly wasn’t with us.

The most elegant resort in Tenerife with just one tiny problem

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

We've just spent a week at this gorgeous resort, and I can honestly say we loved it. The setting on the cliffs above a sandy beach, with spectacular views of the sea at every turn is perfection. The restaurants are fantastic and varied enough that you only need to leave the resort if you wish to. The lush greenery, the many swimming pools, and the unexpectedly beautiful touches – such as the heavy windchimes hanging high above a passage to the pool – make this place special. Every staff member we encountered was friendly and helpful. Over and over again they went above and beyond. The rooms are kept pristinely clean. The ambiance is casual elegance – this isn't a t-shirt hotel; it's several steps up from that. And the spa! Trust me. You want to have a massage at this hotel. All that said, there were some flaws that we had to find our way around. This hotel is VERY family friendly. Breakfast in the main hotel was like dining in a primary school – you could hear it long before you arrived. Children ran uncontrolled, and the inevitable crashing of breaking dishes followed. It was hilarious in a way, but also a bit much. Similarly, the swimming pools at the main 'citadel' hotel are all packed with sugared up kids, having an amazing time, which is great, but also not terribly restful. We transferred to an adults-only villa after the first day, and I recommend this to other child-free travellers. It is much, much, much quieter there. However, it still won't save you completely. In truth, there simply aren't enough child-free places at this hotel. We thought we could escape the scampering hordes at the bar, but no. At the bar in the citadel we watched children trying to touch the guitar a musician was playing, while across the room two young parents exercised strenuously for half an hour in front of the piano to amuse their infant. Children regularly ran into the paths of waiters, and we once saw a waiter barely avoid stepping on a crawling baby while carrying a tray of cocktails. It is… a lot. There are no separate dining places for adults at breakfast even if you're staying in a villa (I pause to mention that breakfasts here are incredible and varied and you willl love them) so we were surrounded by crying babies basically every minute that we were not at the adults-only pool. This is an elegant hotel, but it needs more elegant spaces for grown-ups. I would love it if a large part of the bar were only for adults. Some restaurants in the hotel have adults-only sections and I wish breakfasts also had that option. Small changes like that could make this a more restful place for all guests, not only families with young children. But none of that will stop us from coming back here. We adored our stay, and we found enough peace to make it a regular on our travel itinerary. One thing it did not do at all was make us question our birth control decisions.
