Reviews for Palazzo di Varignana Resort and Spa

One of the best weeks we've ever had!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

Dear Palazzo di Varignana Team, We had the pleasure of spending a few days at your wonderful Palazzo last June. We really enjoyed the fantastic location and above all the perfect, professional and uncomplicated service, especially at the reception provided by Giulia. The atmosphere was very relaxed at all times. This was especially due to the staff that acted very courteous and helpful, from the several restaurants to the bar, SPA and housekeeping - everything worked at 5-star level. In addition, the events organised by the various car clubs were great and an enrichment for every car fan;) Also the SPA treatmens and pool landscape were amazing! We'd also like to say thank you for the upgrade we got last time to the wonderful rooms facing the great landscape of Emilia-Romagna. That's why we're coming back! :) Next trip is already booked again for June as this is such a beautiful month for Italy. We are looking forward to some lovely, relaxing and sunny days at your resort. Best wishes and continued success, see you soon Kathrin & Holger and Frank

Beautiful place

My husband and I stayed here on our 3 and 4 night in Italy. Great driving distance from Imola and Maranello if you are an F1 or Ferrari fan. We we very surprised at how large all of the facilities are and enjoyed every min. Breakfast was very good and we ate at 2 of the hotels restaurants, the Le Marzoline had the best pasta. Would definitely recommend if you are looking for an all inclusive stop.

Excellent Service and Facilities

I have just returned from a trip to Palazzo di Varignana during which I was assisting a wellness retreat. I have to say the level of service was exceptional, from reception (notably Carolina and Federico) to bar and restaurant staff, the spa team .... literally every department... The events team run by Stefania and the spa manager, Jennifer were always on hand, and clearly dedicated to providing a smooth and efficient service. The scientific director and nutritionist, Annamaria Acquaviva, is a wealth of knowledge and is extremely passionate and educated in her field. The grounds are beautiful, the spa is vast and well-equipped, then there is the olive oil and wine all produced from the extensive grounds. The food was incredible in every restaurant with a wide variety of healthy options to choose from, as well as some Italian classics! I would definitely recommend a trip to Palazzo di Varignana, whether you are looking for a wellness trip or just looking for some good food, excellent service and a bit of pampering!

Don't be fooled by the aesthetic

My friend recently got married and whilst the grounds are objectively beautiful, the service was certainly not 4*. My friend’s wedding cards were picked up and ‘lost’ by someone at the hotel. No remorse, no urgency in trying to retrieve them - they’re gone. Wedding favors (bottles of limoncello) were taken and drunk by staff (photographic evidence). Wedding guests were having to go and get wine themselves because the staff were unaccommodating. On the last night I upgraded to a suite as a honeymoon gift for my partner. That day the hotel had a huge corporate event that they situated in the central swimming pool (right opposite our suite). This meant no access to the pool for the day (surely a discount should be offered for not having access to one of the most integral part of the hotel?!). Heavy bass and excessively loud music was played beyond 12am, despite multiple requests to reception to turn it down/off. Hosting an event of that magnitude and situating it right by the rooms is ridiculous - for an event of this size / one that's situated right by the rooms, the resort should have been privatised. It's not fair if you have other guests. To be frank, I felt like I was on the strip in Ibiza / a party town, not a spa resort in the hills of Bologna.

Underwhelmed - left much to be desired

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 8 months ago

The Palazzo is a lot of smoke and mirrors. It gives the appearance of an upscale resort, yet it cut corners everywhere and was severely lacking in customer service and attention to detail. For being in the Italian countryside of Bologna, I felt like it was a cheap American spa resort that happened to be in Italy. Starting with the room, I booked a deluxe superior which states there is a balcony with a view, and I was put in a sub level basement room which opened up to a very tall fence blocking the light, let alone any type of view. When asked to change they told us it was last minute (I booked months before) and they showed us a room which was dark and dreary, a downgrade, with a view of the back of the hotel with a putting green and dead grass and trees. Horrible. The food was nothing to speak of, breakfast was garbage. The resort is huge with no signage to get around, no golf carts or any way to get around besides walking (forget heels ladies - and we weee there for a wedding so we were all dressed up ). They seem to be saving on electricity because everything was dark all the time. The lights would turn on in the hallways after you’ve walked through so you are in darkness at night in the underground tunnels which is unsafe and scary. Lights turned off in the restroom after 30 seconds also. Overall - I was underwhelmed, the hotel left much to be desired. I would absolutely not return.
