About the Hotel

Voted the Best Hotel in South America by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler, Belmond Hotel Monasterio deserves every accolade that comes its way. Built in the 16th century as a monastery on Inca foundations, this cloistered compound is located amid the historic splendor of Cusco, Peru. Most notably, the hotel serves as an ideal base for exploring the mystical ruins of Machu Picchu. Much of the original architecture of Belmond Hotel Monasterio remains intact, paying homage to its original seminarian occupants. In keeping with its intended purpose, the rooms and suites feature a mix of traditional and contemporary furnishings, with a gallery of religious art gracing the walls. Because of the high elevation, 11,000 feet above sea level, many of the rooms are equipped with an oxygen supplementation system for your added comfort.

Reviews for Belmond Hotel Monasterio

Fantastic Hotel

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

This is a gorgeous property in an ideal location for enjoying and exploring the main, historic areas of Cusco. Both restaurants were amazing. The more formal one had amazing live opera music while the more casual one had such incredible service that our waitress knew our coffee preferences by the very first day. The hotel offers many little touches such as a lovely art tour, a traditional Andes weaver, an a coffee specialist. I would highly recommend this property for any guest looking to enjoy Cusco.

Best Hotel EVER!

We have stayed at many fine hotels around the world. This one is probably one of the best. The beauty and the calmness is exceptional.

Nice hotel but service is just OK - not great.

It’s a very nice looking hotel but the service is so much better at Belmond Nazarenes - their sister property next door. The deli in the hotel, however, is excellent and service is excellent. I’d choose Belmond nazarenas or Palacio del Inka for rooms and service.

Service Inconsistency

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

We stayed in this hotel which is converted from a monastery for two nights before proceeding to our Andean Explorer train tour. The building is definitely awesome. Located very conveniently in the vivid part of the old town, it is truly imposing. A large courtyard where breakfast is served, with a background hymn music, it is almost magical. The rooms, despite converted from monastery cells, are spacious and nicely decorated. At least our room was so, we stayed in room no 427. Yet, the service level was not up to our expectations. Room service and breakfast staff were all very customer oriented and we really felt very happy with them. But I can not say the same thing for the reception and front desk staff. We arrived to the hotel late in the afternoon after two domestic flights from the Peruvian Amazons and we were pretty tired. When we arrived to the hotel, instead of being directly escorted to our room, we have been asked to fill in forms in the lobby and the information we have been asked were already the information we have given to our Belmond agents. We stayed in other Belmond hotels during our Peru trip and we have not been asked to fill in any forms of the sort. So the start was not a positive one. I have been hit by the altitude sickness despite staying in a room with extra oxygen. But as we have not been told at the check-in that there was an additional oxygen option, my first night was nightmarish. I learnt about it only the following morning when our guide arrived. My altitude sickness continued the second night too and when I have asked for a paramedic, the reception told me that there is no paramedic at the hotel (hard to understand in a luxurious hotel at a high altitude) and that if I want they could call a doctor from a clinic for extra cost and didn't even bother to offer any other support. I found the whole attitude truly unacceptable for an establishment which pretends to be top notch. Yes, the ambiance is very very impressive in this hotel but as long as there is no consistency in service level, the whole experience is ruined.

Hotel Monasterio in Cusco is truly world-class. Cusco is about 11,000 feet in altitude, but they offer oxygen supplement in rooms. Everything is superb. The manager invited us to a special cocktail party on one night, very gracious.

My daughter and I enjoyed our trip to Peru immensely. We stayed at the Hotel Monasterio in Cusco and found it to be superb. We had a magnificent suite, the staff was perfect and the chef sent us a wonderful surprise birthday cake to our room.

We visited Peru and the entire trip was spectacular. Orient-Express hotels provided exceptional service and world-class accommodations. We stayed at the Miraflores Park Hotel, Hotel Monasterio, and Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. All three hotels had beautiful rooms, outstanding restaurants, and a helpful friendly English-speaking staff. From now on, Orient-Express will be at the top of my list for worldwide travel.

We traveled to Peru and enjoyed stays at Miraflores Hotel in Lima, Hotel Monasterio in Cusco, and Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. I am highly satisfied and recommend these hotels without reservation.
