Built in the 18th century by the Saxon king, August the Strong [as a pledge of love to his mistress], and faithfully restored in 1995, Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski Dresden is a beautiful combination of historic glory and contemporary elegance.

This hotel is the textbook definition of what a five-star experience should be. It doesn’t just check the boxes, it rewrites the exam. The building itself is stunning, a former 18th-century palace that was heavily damaged in the 1945 bombing of Dresden and perfectly restored. The latest renovation, completed in 2023, is nothing short of magnificent, an architectural gem for both history and modern luxury. The staff? A flawless combination of German efficiency and genuine attentiveness. No hollow smiles, no fussing, just calm, competent people who actually do things. Refreshing, isn’t it? I traveled with my family and we booked two rooms: a Palais Room for my wife and me, and a Grand Palais Room (larger, as the name suggests) for the kids. Both rooms featured separate showers and bathtubs, gorgeous hardwood parquet flooring, and top-tier linens, towels, and toiletries. Not a chipped tile or sad pillow in sight. Pro tip: don’t miss the bar downstairs. The cakes are borderline criminal in their deliciousness. I still think about them…. I’d love to offer constructive criticism, I really would, but the truth is, I can’t think of a single thing I’d change. It’s that good. Well… one thing. Leaving is hard. Brutally hard. You’ve been warned.

My second stay. The hotel is truly beautiful - new rooms with contemporary luxury design. Everything is perfect. Please, the breakfast restaurant also needs to be renovated - it looks terrible, 90s design. It greatly reduces the overall impression of the hotel.

Our stay at Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski Dresden was simply wonderful. The rooms were beautifully designed — colorful, warm, and inviting — making it a joy to return to after exploring the city. Every detail felt thoughtful and refined. The bar was a highlight, with an impressive cocktail selection from around the world and an interactive menu that made the experience even more fun. We spent a great evening discovering new flavors. If I had to mention one thing, the indoor pool was colder than expected, which made it a bit hard to fully enjoy. Still, it didn’t take away from how much we loved our stay. Dresden is stunning, and this hotel made the experience even more unforgettable. I would absolutely return.

A grand hotel in the best Kempinski mode: formal, fully staffed, well appointed and gracious. Great -- yes, great -- breakfast buffet. Access to good restaurants, some part of, some adjacent to the hotel. Location in the center of things, within a stroll of the major museums, opera, galleries, and all.

I’m not sure my stay warrants a full review as I arrived very late and had to leave the following morning but I still somehow had a marvellous time even though I slept for most of it. What I want from a 5 star hotel is for everything to be easy and for them to anticipate what I might want. I had a nightmare of day and when I eventually arrived my car was parked for me without fuss, check in was easy and friendly. Drink service in the bar was a bit slower than I would like but the drinks were excellent. There was a bottle of sparkling wine in my room as a treat but I unfortunately didn’t get to enjoy it. The room was stunning and a very comfortable place to chill. I slept very well. Breakfast was outstanding and check out was effortless. Probably spent less than 12 hours there but very keen to return to enjoy the amenities to a greater extent and to actually see some of Dresden.
