Important - The Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh – The Caledonian has recently been renamed to The Caledonian Edinburgh, Curio Collection by Hilton. The Caledonian Edinburgh is currently undergoing renovation expected to be completed early 2025. I was Greeted at the front door by Mark the concierge on my return from my Christmas break I am a frequent visitor to the hotel so Mark recognized me and greeted me by name. He then directed me to the reception desk where I was welcomed back by Cath and Adam I was given my room card and directed to the elevator.

Terrific, grand old hotel with fresh, clean rooms and spacious bathrooms. Many rooms have fantastic views of Edinburgh Castle. The service was excellent!

Strange place
Hotel - Beautiful Building, Visually Stunning. Rooms - Not 5 star, Cold, Dusty, Noisy. Service - Awful, from the reception to the restaurant staff/manager. What the hell was going on I don’t know. To the point of witnessing 2 reception staff having an argument in front of guests. Food - Mediocre and not worth the price at all. Wants to be high end but lacks everything high end achieves. Bar Staff - Pretentious, kept waiting whilst they polished a glass starring at me. Strange. Wish I’d have stayed in another hotel.

New Year at the Caledonian
Had such a wonderful stay for New Year at The Caledonian. Excellent service, friendly staff. Food was amazing and access to the rest of the seasonal fun in Edinburgh was perfect. I recommend getting a room looking over the castle to see the fireworks at Hogmanay. Go out to the street party or stay in the very cool Caledonian bar to have cocktails - The spa was open on New Years Day and we had the best pampering massage, hot tub and chill out. If there is one place to be on New Years Eve- choose this hotel!

Absolutely disappointed with this hotel
I have never left a negative review so please trust this as honest and go and spend your hard earned cash at another hotel. I booked this hotel for part of my wife’s 40th birthday because she has always wanted to return to Edinburgh. Out of all the places I could have booked I chose here. Such a mistake. I’d like to point out this is the first in all my life negative review I’ve ever written. We booked on a 2 night Dinner/Bed/Breakfast basis and paid full in advance (rather a lot of money) and informed the hotel beforehand it was my wife’s 40th. As soon as we arrived we went into the bar entrance instead of the main entrance by error it was dark cold and late, we had travelled from Shropshire. The bar staff looked at us as if we were aliens and asked us what we were doing. I informed them we would like to check in, and they pointed us to reception. Once at reception, the receptionist mentioned it was a special birthday and my wife said yes it was. She then said we would like to give you a complementary breakfast? It was at this point things started to go downhill. I advised her we had booked on a half board basis and pre paid in full. 20 mins later they confirmed we did. We then asked if we could go to the restaurant for dinner (which we had paid for) to be told we will call you and let you know. It was already 8:15pm. My wife had to ask where our room was and for directions to it, whilst I parked the car. No help at all with valet. Not a 5 star establishment. 20mins later we were told we could dine at 8:45. So we make our way down to the bar for a quick drink. 6minutes it took for the barman to acknowledge us, please note the bar was not busy at all. By this point we had to take our full drinks into the Restaurant as we didn’t have time to drink them. The Restaurant if I could give it 0 stars I would and it would truly deserve them, trust me. Please spend your hard earned cash somewhere that deserves it. We were shown to our table by I assume the Maître d. At this point looking back we should have walked out. We were shown a menu (the restaurant was not busy) & told what we could choose from, we were also told that they knew we were not paying. This was so unbelievably rude. We had paid for everything in advance. My husband had steak, no steak knife, nobody asked us if we would like anymore drinks, nobody asked us if our food was ok. Nobody. Then we asked for the bill to pay for the 2 drinks we had. The bill came with all the food on it. We then had to explain again that we had pre paid on a half board basis. The manager then removed the food. No apologies no nothing. It was embarrassing. Breakfast was exactly the same. We had to do the same thing over in regards to payment. Then the last nights dinner my wife’s actual 40th birthday meal. We were seated on a table for 4. Waitress came over and asked where the 3rd guest was? We told her there’s only 2 of us. She then said no you booked for 3 people. We didn’t. Ordered food, steak knife came (wow) told no deserts left that my wife wanted which was fine she ordered something else. This was the upsetting part, the table next to us had a birthday and they were brought out a dessert and a happy birthday etc but my wife wasn’t. They knew it was her birthday, it was on their system. Finished out mediocre meal (please do not spend your money here, the food is crap) and asked for the bill. We should have been used to it by now and the same thing happened. Told them again we had paid etc etc. But this time the restaurant manager didn’t believe us, he escorted us (like we were some sort of criminals) to the reception so they could confirm. Which they did. At this point my wife walked away disgusted and embarrassed on her birthday. The restaurant manager half heartedly apologised and I couldn’t believe it. My wife complained, she has never complained in her life but that was the icing on the cake. She asked for the manager to be aware of the way we had been treated, that nothing was done special for her birthday & that it was ruined. You can guess what happened next…….nothing. Nothing was done. Just it’s a new system we are using. Please do not book here, Edinburgh is beautiful and there are so many extra special places that deserve the £600+ we paid. Places that will make your stay memorable.
