Reviews for Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian

Super location, amazing staff, 3* room and 1* breakfast!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 8 hours ago

3 hrs + delay to check into our room due to a maintenance issue. Eventually advised by duty manager that our original room would be unavailable. We booked a deluxe king room. Duty manager was very professional and offered a number of complementary items by way of apology. The room we were eventually checked into 170 was a let down to say the least. Very basic decor, limited furniture and amenities and tiny bathroom with a sliding door. Room felt as if it would not normally be used and had a musty smell when we got into it. Raised these issues with reception but no alternative rooms were available due to hotel being fully booked. The is hotel location is brilliant, communal areas, lobby, restaurants are beautiful with superb staff but very disappointed with our room and breakfast. Breakfast is very expensive and the quality was poor pre cooked hot buffet items not hot and eggs, bacon etc felt as it they had been sitting quite awhile. Sadly will not book a return visit to the hotel but will definitely be back in Edinburgh.

They offered a Porto of 20 years but served a 10 years one.

We were a group of almost 20 “rude” Chilean celebrating a birthday dinner of a generous friend. Finishing the dinner a humble waiter offered to man of the night a Porto, showing a bottle of 20 years together with a group of 4 or 5 glasses already served with a dark liquid. Because the first 4 or 5 glasses were not enough for all the drinks lovers, the same humble waiter appeared offering glasses with a less dark liquid. Based on the obvious differences between the two rounds of Portos I approached the waiter asking an explanation. After 5 minutes the waiter appeared with two Porto bottles of the same brand but one of 10 years and other of 20. The 10 years one was empty and the bottle of 20 was almost full. Definitely the waiter was not the responsible, but the hostess in charge of the celebration was not able to explained what happened in the bar. She just talked about their professionalism of her team appealing that she will review what happened. I didn’t reviewed if the hotel charged for a 20 or 10 years Porto, but the experience is far of what you spect from a management that use the history of The Caledonian Hotel under Waldorf Astoria and Hilton brands. The Chilean call this experience as “give a mouse instead of a rabbit” …, bartender tricky? Management costs saving? Scam?

Exceptional!

This is an exceptional hotel and not to be missed. While the architectural aesthetics and craftsmanship of the conversion from the original transport facility were executed with fascinating detail, they pale in comparison to the quality and care of its staff. Their professionalism, service and attention to details should serve as the standard for others in the hospitality industry to aspire to both in Edinburgh and around the globe.

The Waldorf is the place to stay in Edinburgh, expensive but quality is never cheap. The facilities and rooms were great we had a Castle View room wonderful to see the magical castle when you woke up. The staff were very helpful and friendly which made our stay perfect.

The best hotel staff I have ever experienced

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

The Waldorf is a beautiful hotel with a very nice spa. We also thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon tea. But what makes this hotel truly special is the staff. We have stayed at a number of 5 star hotels, and the staff here are the best we have ever seen at a hotel. They were incredibly friendly and helpful, routinely going out of their way to make our stay there a delight. From the girl who checked us in, to the bellmen, to the staff at the spa, they were all a joy to interact with. If we are ever back in Edinburgh, there is no question that we will stay at the Waldorf because of their fantastic staff.
