Welcome to The American Club Resort Hotel, a five-star, five-diamond hotel that has stood as an icon of gracious hospitality for over 100 years. Built in 1918 as a dormitory for single, male immigrant employees of Kohler, The American Club was reborn in 1981 as a five-star, five-diamond destination resort hotel. It retained its historic richness, storybook charm and a single level of quality that comes with everything bearing the Kohler name.

Few American resorts manage to feel both storied and consistently renewed. The American Club at Kohler is one of them. After many years of near-annual visits—most recently as a year-end birthday tradition—our early 2026 stay reaffirmed why this property remains a benchmark for Midwestern luxury hospitality. Arrival & First Impressions We arrived as snow was gently falling, instantly elevating the sense of place. Winter suits Kohler well, and with Frozen Fairways underway, the resort felt both festive and refined. Despite arriving before 1:00 p.m., we were graciously checked in early—a small but telling signal of the American Club’s service philosophy. From valet to front desk to concierge, the staff consistently demonstrated an authentic commitment to making the stay seamless and memorable. This is not scripted service; it is practiced excellence. Accommodations We were upgraded to a Governor’s Suite—an experience that deserves special mention. Beautifully appointed and thoughtfully themed in homage to Mark Twain, the suite balanced elegance with warmth and personality. The craftsmanship, comfort, and attention to detail were exemplary, reinforcing the American Club’s reputation for rooms that feel both luxurious and lived-in. Dining Experiences Lunch at the Blackwolf Run Restaurant set a pleasant tone. The service and ambiance were excellent, and while the food was good, it did not quite rise to the level one expects at this caliber. My turkey pita was very good, though others in our group found their selections merely “fine.” That said, the snowy landscape and Frozen Fairways atmosphere softened any culinary shortcomings. Dinner at the Horse & Plow was a highlight. The smash burger I enjoyed ranks among the best I’ve had anywhere—perfectly executed and satisfying without pretension. Service was attentive and polished, striking the right balance for a relaxed evening. Pre- and post-dinner cocktails in the Library Bar remain one of the American Club’s great pleasures. The ambiance is timeless, intimate, and quietly elegant, and the bartender delivered outstanding craftsmanship and hospitality. The following morning’s brunch in the Wisconsin Room was a fitting finale. The setting alone is worth the visit—classic, light-filled, and distinctly Kohler. Whether enjoying the brunch offerings or ordering à la carte, the food was very good, and, as throughout the stay, service was consistently excellent. Spa & Activities No visit to Kohler is complete without time at the Kohler Waters Spa, and it once again delivered. Every treatment was very good, reaffirming that it is nearly impossible to go wrong with any selection here. Meanwhile, our friends enjoyed the Swing Suite golf experience, a reliable and enjoyable option we’ve also appreciated on past visits. Departure & Final Thoughts Checkout was effortless, assisted by the same outstanding valet team that welcomed us upon arrival—a small detail, but one that completes the experience on a high note. The American Club is not just a luxury resort; it is a destination defined by consistency, craftsmanship, and genuinely warm service. While not every dish reaches greatness, the total experience—particularly in winter—more than compensates. For celebrations, retreats, or simply a refined escape, the American Club at Kohler remains highly recommended and continues to stand apart as one of America’s great resort experiences.

I always enjoy when I find myself working in the area and I have to travel in to stay here. The staff is always so welcoming. I always look forward to going to dinner with such a great wine program. Sorry I missed Heather this time, always a great experience.

Very much recommend a trip to The American Club. The hotel and grounds are beautiful, the staff friendly, and the experience the best of the best.

We have just returned from a four night stay at the American Club. We had high expectations of this 5 star resort and booked a superior king room. We found the resort to be beautifully decorated for the holidays, lights, trees, garland everywhere you looked. Our superior king room was a nice size and housekeeping did a great job. We enjoyed dining in 3 restaurants and found the food to be delicious. Overall, the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. However, our experience was not all pleasant and the following are the disappointments we experienced: * in attempting to book a massage at the spa, we were told that because it was a holiday weekend, every guest had to book at least two services and every party on the reservation had to as well. So even though my husband was not interested in the spa, if I wanted a service, he also had to book two services. They explained this was to limit the number of the people in the spa. This makes no sense as they were requiring more guests to be there. Their reasoning was confusing, our travel agent got varying, inconsistent explanations when the policy was questioned. We have never experienced this at luxury properties such as Ritz Carlton and Four Seasons. * No workout facility on sight. The facility open to guests is about a mile away and could be compared to a YMCA teeming with kids and families. * While our room was spacious, it was in need of an update. It was very dark, the bathroom was freezing ( I have included a photo of the dirty, noisy wall heater that was on the wall). It was so loud that you couldn’t have it on so we had to deal with the chilly temps. The room had no drawers for clothing and a very small closet. This room was more than 700./ night. This definitely was not up to our expectations. Overall, we were disappointed in our stay. I am not sure we will return or recommend this property to others.

It is a Beautiful hotel, with very good service and great ambiance; but in need to lots of work in the rooms and common areas.
