Stay here if cost is no object

Villa D'Este is, without doubt one off the world's great hotels and occupies a commanding presence on the bank of Lake Como. From the moment you arrive at the imposing gates (and yes, it is the entrance and yes, you do have to wait for someone to notice you and open them and yes, you do have to explain that you are a guest, unless, perhaps, you arrive in a Bugatti Chiron) you are left in little doubt that it is a very serious hotel. You can then navigate your way down the lengthy drive heading for hotel reception rather that Sporting Club, and you may find your way down into the, slightly tight, underground carpark (not sure if they offer valet parking. we didn't ask, being highly independent, and it was not suggested). The reception is very friendly, as are the concierge staff. Cannot fault it other than to say the lobby as somewhat over perfumed for my tastes. The room was satisfactory, but not exceptional. When we booked (February) the only rooms we could find available were the cheapest Classic Courtyard view, but even these came in at €1300 per night. I have stayed in many of the world's great hotels, and Villa D'Este is certainly right up there, but it is not the best, there is something lacking in ambience and overall feel which left me feeling mildly disappointed, I guess because I had such high expectations. Maybe it is just not my kind of place, or maybe it was the deluging rain which slightly took the edge off our stay. One thing is for sure it is a high quality, luxury hotel and we are very glad we have experienced it. Make sure you explore the grounds fully especially the network of little faux forts to the North and West. There are three restaurants (reviewed separately) all of which are good but not sure any of them are in line for a Michelin star. But the prices are. Expect to pay €200+ per head and more if you like your wine.

Villa D’Este was dream I didn’t want to wake up from

It’s been a dream of mine to see Lake Como in late spring and stay specifically at Villa D’Este. The Villa exceeded my lofty expectations. The grounds are simply breathtaking. The service, incredible. The food was spectacular. The housekeeping turnaround time was so fast and they checked our rooms multiple times per day. No detail left unseen. Some people may find the rooms outdated, but I think it blends very well into the history of this magnificent palace. Honestly, I think if you don’t stay here (or at least a comparable property), you’re missing a big part of the Lake Como experience. It’d be like going to see the Lake without doing a boat tour. I loved my stay there. I love Villa D’Este and look forward to returning again with my children next time.

The location , the view, the villa one of the best places I have visited in Lake Como and especially the management team at the reception especially the manager at the office desk. The breakfast is one of the amazing places I had breakfast on it

A beautiful time machine

Ther’s 5 stars and then there’s 5 stars: this is 5 STARS! The grounds are beautiful and the arrival impressive. Despite early arrival, they found me a room. The room was beautiful: huge room, super mattress and pillows, walk-in closet and beautiful bathroom. The service was impeccable with an amazing eye on details! The food was fantastic and breakfast lavish. It is like taking a trip back in time, but done well, not tacky. Can’t wait to be back and bring the family (and dog!)
