The Kensington

My friend and I decided to splurge on an afternoon tea after seeing the Marie Antoinette Exhibit at the V&A. The afternoon tea is £59 per person plus taxes and we had pre-booked a month before. The surroundings were lovely and very Christmassy. The presentation and cakes were delicious and beautiful and what we couldn’t finish could be nicely boxed to take home. What let it down was the poor service. We didn’t have the same person bringing the food and tea as the person who introduced themselves. I ordered hot water to dilute my strong tea and held off eating to enjoy with a 2nd cup. Hot water took more than 20 minutes to arrive by which time the first tea type I chose was cold. I was interested in purchasing some of the tea canisters for gifts (which were noted on the menu). The staff didn’t seem to know anything about it and eventually after more delay a staff member came out and said I could purchase loose tea in a clear bag. Even paying the bill was difficult with a comment “the service is very poor” (ah, yes). A fellow guest who had arrived well after us was sympathetic and acknowledged that we had had a series of mishaps. A staff member did take our photo which was a nice momento. The ambience, food and décor - superb. There were long delays between each request and I was beginning to feel irritated at having to get someone’s attention for service as the space was not overly busy. For the price ($150AUS each) attentive and prompt service would improve the special occasion. In comparison I enjoyed other lovely cafes in London at a tenth of the price which I would give 5 stars rather than 3.

Extraordinary across the board! This is such a beautiful hotel, and the service and accommodations were perfection. What a wonderful stay!

Great service, great location, great staff! This place should meet all of your needs. Rooms are well appointed, clean and in fine working order. The food was always good.... breakfast, lunch and dinner. The High Tea looked beautiful and seemed very popular with the guest. A Great Hotel!

Exceptional, from the moment the door man opening the front doors we were made to feel welcomed and part of the Doyle Collection. The Kensington has a vibe that's just so different to the Marylebone yet there are some similarities and that's a lovely touch i.e. The Bar.

We had a superb night at The Kensington on Saturday. Staff are simply brilliant. The hotel is not small but feels very boutique and it feels like the whole team truly care that you have a great experience. Food is great, furniture and decorations are stunning. We have been back 3 times now. Service and breakfast/dinner was first class.
