Amantaka: Not to be missed

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

There is nothing like an Aman experience. Amantaka is the 8th Aman property that we've stayed at and we couldn't recommend it enough. Luang Prabang is not easy to get to as flights are limited and required we spend a night in Bangkok on our way there, and a night in Singapore on our way home. Still, it is entirely worth the effort. We spent one week at the property which is more than enough time to see the requisite sights. This also afforded us the opportunity to enjoy the luxury of such gorgeous accommodations. Elodie welcomed us and took great care to see that our stay was special. We were celebrating our 30th anniversary; there were thoughtful gestures, acknowledgements and surprises arranged by her throughout the week. Her connection to Laos is deep. Elodie is a consummate professional, as well as a personable and generous host. In her learning about how she has made her life there we were afforded insights about the country and people. Laos, Luang Prabang and Amantaka are not to be missed if you can be so fortunate.

AMANTAKA IS MAGNIFICENT! And LUANG PRABANG IS A FABULOUS TOWN!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

The hotel is in a wonderful location close to the Unesco protected old town of Luang Prabang that is great for seeing all the sites including the temples, shopping, cafes, restaurants, night market and day market. We stayed 5 nights which I thought was perfect for seeing all that Luang Prabang offers. The town reminds me how so many Asian cities were 50 years ago. It is truly special! The French colonial architecture of the hotel is stunning on beautiful estate grounds and gardens with a amazing atmosphere. I recommend to do the package the hotel offers that includes a city tour, breakfast and dinner, sunset cruise, baci ceremony, Alms offering with the monks, massage, airport transfers etc. The hotel provides complimentary bicycles but we used their Tuk- tuk and car that will take you to the town, for the markets , cafes and shopping anytime you want. The chef- JS, prepared delicious meals with lots of choices at breakfast and dinner. He was also very engaging with the guests as he wanted to explain all the food prepartions and he wanted to make sure you were happy with the selection. He even made us a special Italian dinner one evening. Dinner was at the lovely pool by candlelight every evening in a beautiful setting. Desserts were delicious too! The waiters were so attentive and provided great service. They even had a performance with dancers and masked performers by the pool one night that was very entertaining. There are also musicians playing music every day at the hotel. Amantaka is a class act in everything they do! Don’t miss the complimentary tea time with desserts and treats in the afternoon. We loved walking through the town seeing the lovely architecture of all the buildings, shopping and stopping at French Bakeries. I wrote the hotel months in advance and communicated with Elodie who is the Guest Relations Manager. Her emails to me were very detailed and she arranged our city tour which included the Royal Palace Museum and Temples and she provided a very knowledgeable guide. Also a trip to Kuang Si Waterfalls , the Lao Bear Sanctuary and neighboring tribal villages was a great tour she organized for us. We had the pleasure of meeting her at the hotel. She is an amazing person and we adored her! Amantaka is lucky to have such a dedicated and passionate person working for them. She was a true highlight of our stay at Amantaka. Elodie even accompanied us to the Deaf and Mute Center that gives deaf children an education and opportunity to learn a job including dressmaking, weaving, carpentry etc in order to have a professional integration into society when they graduate. It was an incredible experience to see the children’s classrooms, living quarters, cafeteria and how they prepare their meals . The children come from villages in Laos and are so happy there. We donated money to provide fresh water for the children for one month. They were so appreciative. We enjoyed the hotel’s luxurious boat for a 2 hour sunset cruise on the Mekong River and the food and drinks were great! Must see and do when in Luang Prabang: Mandalao Elephant Experience, Big Brother Mouse Center (Drop in to help young Laotians improve their skills, at their English conversation practice), Waterfalls and Bear Sanctuary, Night Market (reasonably priced local handicrafts), Day Market (incudes fruits, vegetables ) UXO Lao Visitors Centre , The Deaf and Mute Center, and city tour of the Palace and temples. The hotel spa was fantastic and we loved our massages and the hot pool we used before our treatments. There were complimentary drinks in the mini fridge in the Villas and also wonderful complimentary laundry. Our suite accommodations was gorgeous with a lovely décor and furnishings that included a separate sitting area, bedroom, beautiful bathroom and outdoor pool and lounging area. Housekeeping cleaned our room to perfection! Thank you for the great service. Norbu the General Manager was lovely and he knows how to run a great hotel and under his leadership provides guests with a memorable experience. Amantaka has won many accolades including: Laos Leading Hotel by World Travel Awards, and Travel and Leisure magazine luxury award for Laos’ best hotel. Luang Prabang and Amantaka was a highlight on our 5 country trip. It was a short flight from Bangkok. I would like to thank the staff that made our stay at Amantaka so exceptional! Exceptional property

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 months ago

We spent 3 tremendous days/evenings at the Amantaka in January '25 while visiting Luang Prabang. From the moment of arrival, we recognized that everything about the Amantaka -- from the warm and inviting staff to facilities -- was exceptional. And our suite was without doubt as gracious and beautiful as we've ever experienced during our travels worldwide -- architecturally stunning, including foyer, delightful vaulted sitting room with desk, charming bedroom, very ample closet space with dual armoires, and sumptuous bath with dual vanities, private water closet, tub and shower...and access to our own rear walled terrace with private pool (there is a shared public pool as well). One significant added appeal of the Amantaka is its lovely proximity to Luang Prabang's night market, primary commercial streets, and the bars along the Mekong. This is truly a great property and superb location. And the staff is among the finest we've ever experienced. Loved our stay!

Beautiful hotel in a town which is sadly threatened by tourism

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 months ago

Amantaka is an extremely beautiful hotel designed and built according to traditional Laotian architecture. Service is the best as typical in all Aman resorts. The pool was a relaxing space after a day of walking tour. I thought monsoon seson would have been terrible and instead it was pleasant in a unique way. The garden was green and lush. I am not giving 5 star not because of the hotel but because Luang Prabang is quickly loosing its identity and this is reflected everywhere in the small town including hotels, cafes and restaurants. Speed trains are bringing the worse overtourism into Laos and you feel that the traditional charm of the past is destined to disappear. Seeing the alm ceremony with hundreds of tourists taking photos up to the face of the monks and calling each other loud was just a sad tragic nightmare. I hope for the sake of the future of Luang Prabang the municipality and all the hotels and tourist venues will do somthing to not suffocate Luang Prabang and preserve its fragile beauty.

Stunning setting and service

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 months ago

Close to the bustle of the small city but a serene oasis where nothing is too much trouble . The grounds and buildings of the former French hospital have been transformed but retain their heritage . The pool is a lovely centre piece and at night is transformed with lanterns to a beautiful terrace setting for dinner . Suites are large , and blend teak with modern materials to offer comfort , style and cool retreats with large bath and shower spaces , comfortable bed , sitting areas indoors and loungers outside . The food is extremely good with dinner menus changing daily and offering perfect Loo choices or excellent western options . Prices are of course steep but with packages for offer of breakfast and another daily meal choice as well as spa massage they feel much better. The gym is well equipped but it might be time to import some newer cardio options . Aman offer excursions including a city tour included in the package , but perfectly safe and well guided alternatives can be bought in the town at a huge saving - why wouldn’t you ? This might be my only real criticism - we visited and elephant sanctuary privately saving hundreds of dollars
