Reviews for The Ritz-Carlton, Marina del Rey

Overall a positive experience

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 days ago

Overall I would recommend this hotel. The rooms are nice. The beds are very comfortable, the pillows are really soft. The service is great, the staff are lovely. Breakfast is very delicious. The gym is great, has all the equipment you’d need. There are some cons: I saw a review saying the towels are quite hard and I agree, they could do with being replaced. The AC in the rooms is very loud, it would disturb your sleep if you needed to run it at night. The pool is aging and needs updating. The steam room in the ladies changing room is also outdated and needs work - the door doesn’t shut properly. The room service menu isn’t great and all the food I ordered arrived cold. Marina del Rey is not the best location as there is not much going on, a general issue with LA is that you need a car and Ubers are expensive.

Terrible experience for a supposed luxury hotel

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

My otherwise pleasant enough stay was marred by difficulties checking in. I made and pre-paid for my reservation through a credit card travel service which includes some premium benefits. But when I tried to check in, I was told that I would need to produce the physical card because this hotel did not have touchless payment systems. Otherwise, the benefits would not be honored, I would have to cancel the pre-paid reservation, and book a new walk-up reservation. Requiring production of the physical card was not a policy written anywhere I could find. It's 2024, in the post-Covid era. I don't carry many physical cards with me. You're ostensibly a luxury hotel. How on earth do you not have touchless payment systems? Or maybe the Ritz can't afford to update them? But if my local taco truck can do it, why can't the Ritz? I tried reasoning with the staff. This was a pre-paid reservation and that card was the one used to pay for it. My ID matched the name on the reservation. I had the card on my phone. I had the card number memorized. I could (and in fact ultimately did) call the card travel services to have them speak with the manager. All of this was for naught. I tried pointing out that the Marriott app allowed for check in with a mobile key so that I would never even have had to come to the front desk. They replied that they would eventually have come knocking at my door to ask for my physical card. That's utter BS. I would honestly love to hear from other similarly situated guests who have received such a visit from the staff. The most bothersome part here is the absurdity of the situation. There was no such policy on the reservation or in the terms and conditions of the card. I was told at one point this is a "security" matter, but my ID matched and I had the card on my digital wallet, plus the card service itself had verified me when they tried reasoning with the hotel staff. And then that nonsense about knocking on the door after check in to request a physical card? As the saying goes, don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining. I will say that the hotel did give some of the minor benefits and at a later time, a different front desk staff member authorized a $100 credit, and I am grateful to her for that. Besides the nonsense at check in, my interactions with the rest of the staff (including the bar and restaurant) were good. So based on this overall experience, I believe 3 stars is absolutely a fair rating.

Mattresses need to be replaced / updated

This was my second visit in 2024 and regrettably this property should be downgraded to a lower status. Both visits in different rooms had lumpy/ cratered mattresses which is simply unacceptable. Staff are polite but property is showing age and rooms are in need of renovation. Showers are basically bathtubs with a shower. This Ritz is a miss and needs work.

This is a great credit to the management of the hotel if you’re flying in to LA this is a perfect stop which is not far

This is a very well run property from the minute you arrive until departure. It’s what Ritz Carlton used to be as many of them are not like this ….food services is good. The bedrooms are very acceptable. Bar service is excellent…. housekeeping is very good the positioning of the hotel is very good. I haven’t any issues with this Hotel whatsoever and would recommend this wholeheartedly, especially as it’s very close to the airport and it’s easy when you have collected your car to get to this hotel but it’s not on the airport boundary it’s a great way to start any vacation, the main thing about this Hotel is that the management run this exceeded well and their disciplines are seen throughout ..,.very well done
