Fine Hotel With Poor Dining Options
My wife and I had the pleasure of staying at the Langham for two nights on a visit to Melbourne. Our room, a suite, was very spacious and well-appointed (although like many hotels the lighting could be improved). The bathroom was over-the-top in space and amenities. The common areas of the hotel are also beautiful and impressive, albeit there seem to be many functions going on at any given time with guest crowds of varying sophistication or lack thereof. The location is central and near the attractions along the river. Where the hotel failed to meet our expectations was in bar and dining. Our first night there, we decided to have a drink in the (rather sterile) bar, and then go to dinner in the hotel's (adjacent) restaurant. Asking for a table at the restaurant, we were informed for the first time that it is a prix-fixe buffet-style restaurant only. A la carte ordering is only available in the bar...but anything one orders there is simply retrieved by bar staff from the buffet. So we went back to the bar, ordered a la carte, and waited. And waited. And waited. Finally we had to summon the barman to inquire where our dinner might be. And when it did arrive, it was mediocre. Needless to say one does not expect this at a first rate establishment. Breakfast is also a buffet but perhaps the best, most comprehensive, buffet I have ever experienced. So, skip dinner but don't miss the breakfast.

An excellent hotel.
This is an excellent hotel that I have been staying at for over 10 years. The facilities are good, the rooms are nice (though they can be better lit), the two restaurants are well patronized and the food quality high, and the staff are friendly and helpful. The additional advantages are that it is close to the scenic South Bank with plenty of good restaurants but without the noise; and Arts Centre Melbourne is near by with interesting programmers throughout the year. All in all, an excellent hotel.
