This review is twofold and we've been up to Ladd's a few times since the opening with mostly good experiences. 1. Dinner at the bar in Ladd's Tavern, Tuesday 10th June. The bar was busy, tables full (looked like a lot of pretty young ladies celebrating end of school or whatever)...the staff seemed quite overwhelmed and Nick (our bartender/waiter at the bar) tacitly agreed. We weren't in a hurry as it was a birthday dinner (we don't ever tell anyone). Our shared salad wa slow to appear but very good...it's their "farm to table" approach that is also evident over at Ninety Acres, where we've been going for some years (we live locally). We'd ordered the shrimp curry for main course. I learned a lesson last Tuesday...never order Indian food from a non-Indian restaurant :( Not only was the food cold-to-lukewarm (I sent mine back for a re-heat), it was devoid of all but a couple of shrimp...but lots and lots and lots of chick peas !...my bowl looked like it was full of marbles. Nick noticed that we both left most of our food and graciously offered to remove the main course from our check. (We were hoping for a good meal, not a free meal). The ambiance is great and they do have a pool table in one of the side rooms...I suppose I should have let my partner win a game or two on her birthday...(she blamed her high heels), but the table itself needs some TLC (I'm a Brit, I think my mother gave birth to me on a snooker table). One other compliment...the view from the back patio is an undisturbed vista of the rolling hills of NJ and well-worth the visit. 2. Communications at Pendry We are inviting friends to Ladd's next Sunday for brunch, so yesterday morning I tried to call to speak to someone about the brunch / seating / timing etc. (I don't trust Open Table...been there, done that ! :( ) Realizing that it's father's day next Sunday, we were prepared to be flexible on timing. However...yesterday (11th) I spent more time being spat out of voicemail systems and waiting for promised return calls than I'm sure we'll spend eating brunch next Sunday ! I initially spoke to two young ladies who both promised to put me through to appropriate people...it didn't happen and I was booted back to voicemail. I then left a voice mail in their voicemail system (at around 10am) and the baritone voice relaying the message told me that "someone would return my call as soon as possible"...yes, you've guessed, that didn't happen either ! So I waited until around 5pm and tried again. This time a polite young man (Zach) listend to my tale of woe and promised (after I requested to speak to a manager) that Khalid (duty restaurant manager) would call me asap. We're now at 7-7.30pm and I called again...this time I spoke to "Graham"...also very polite and apologetic....this time I got Khalid on the 'phone and Khalid could tell that I was none-too-happy. Khalid, to his credit, did explain that he'd been in metings all day (hopefully concerning staff coordination and communications) I let Khalid know that my next call was going to be to either Montage corporate (owners of Pendry) or Pendry's GM. BTW...the GM's name is Derek Descrinier and his extension is 4747 !!!! Candidly...I would have had better luck calling Fawlty Towers (I'm dating myself now). The Ladd's staff are all very pleasant and polite...but the level of incompetence and lack of coordination is quite frustrating...this place needs to iron-out some big kinks before it'll reach four/five stars. Perhaps they should use the Marriott management trainee school (we used to poach our company private jet flight attendants from Marriott :)) We now have a reservation for four at 12.30pm this coming Sunday in Ladd's Tavern...I think I might just drink my lunch ! ...lol

I could write a dissertation about the horrific experience I had here. We booked our stay for the purpose of hosting my daughter’s senior prom send-off; we indicated this on our initial booking (through Amex travel). The only real reason to stay here is for the picturesque views as the rooms are average at best (compared to other upscale hotel brands). In our case we live about 15 minutes away from this property so again, just booked basically to take prom photos. In addition to the initial booking, we indicated we were having a prom send-off via email correspondence with their concierge and via telephone. I thought it was odd that their concierge did not offer accommodations (such as decor, food) as most hotels would, but that wasn’t an issue for me. Upon check-in we, again, indicted we would be having a prom send-off and were shown areas on the property which were ideal for photos. Keep in mind, this is a property that often hosts weddings so there are a lot of places to take photos here. Again, the morning of the event I communicated with the concierge several times via text and telephone regarding the prom send-off and photos. At no point were we ever told that any advance permission needed to be obtained nor were any policies or procedures mentioned in regards to photos on the property or any limited amount of guests. The day of the event we began taking photos in the designated area we were shown the day prior. A staff member immediately chased us away, citing a corporate event was being held there, however there were no other guests in that area. We complied and went out front to the parking lot to continue taking photos as directed by that staff member. We continued taking photos in the parking lot as directed as security personnel and staff members began to follow us around, whispering and glancing. Eventually, escalating to a very uncomfortable level of harassment. Of note, there were no other guests in the parking area at the time and the parking lot is not gated, meaning anyone from the street could enter. Also, photos were being taken by close family members, there was no professional photographer present. Eventually we were told by several staff members that we were not allowed to take photos due to a corporate event, even though as mentioned we never saw this corporate event and there were no guests in the area and certainly not in our photos. We were told we were disruptive even though no one was loud, or impeding the space of staff or guests. We were referred to as an “entourage”. When the incompetent and extremely condescending manager Genevieve was asked to provide us with the policies to support her statements regarding policies against photos and “entourages” at a property that is primarily used to host weddings and other events involving much larger parties and photography she failed to do so. She also could not explain why said “policies” were not reviewed and addressed prior to our stay after multiple points of communication with hotel staff regarding the prom send-off. I requested a refund and to leave the property immediately as my daughters prom (which was the sole reason for booking) was ruined due to the harassment of staff, and we now felt extremely uncomfortable continuing to remain on the property after the treatment we had received. she refused. Thankfully I contacted Amex travel and they refunded that nights stay and we left the property immediately. I think it’s important to note that although I am Caucasian the majority of our party were people of color. I have never had this experience at an luxury hotel or even a mediocre hotel. I am completely appalled by the treatment we received here. You will have a better experience at the Ritz, Waldorf, the Four Seasons, Raffles or the JW. Truthfully, I would rather be at a Holiday Inn. Do not patronize this place!

Thank you for the wonderful Memorial Day weekend at your beautiful resort and spa. We found The Pendry Natirar after researching get-away spots near NYC that provided great amenities and activities for kids and adults. We have stayed at Montage resorts in other parts of the country and expected we would find the same level of quality, service and experience here. While there are many things that were amazing, you could definitely tell that it is a new location with a number of “kinks” that still need to be worked out. Overall, our stay was good with our kids having the most fun.
