Reviews for Hyatt Zilara Riviera Maya

First Time Hyatt Zilara Guests

This property is a great location and a small footprint. It was the former Secrets Capri. It is beginning to show its age. The resort has 4 restaurants. We found that 1 out of 4 restaurants were closed nightly. Michelle, hostess at the buffet, was ALWAYS helpful at getting the gluten free options for breakfast. The food was just ok. I have celiac and options were very limited. The food was not labeled for food allergies. Our favorite restaurant was the Tempest. We enjoyed the meal prepared on the habachi grill. The food was a 4 out of 5. The resort offered minimal daily activities. Millie was the go to girl for activities. She was awesome. We absolutely loved her personality and energy. David often assisted her. He was very friendly. Our room was an ocean front swim up. It was a great location. However, like the resort , it is starting to show its age. The shower would back up and the toilet would plug up. Room service was good, but our room appeared to have never been swept. We had to call nightly for towels and turn down service. In the past it was just part of your stay. The employees were friendly and helpful when possible. Our butler, Sophia, was helpful. She would text daily to check in. Overall we had a decent stay. This would not be our first choice in the future but would not rule it out either.

First try at a Hyatt Zillara and came away disappointed

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

Had heard good things about the Hyatt Zilara and Ziva resorts but wasn't sure about trying one of the larger resorts, so this seemed like a good option for us to take our adult children and their spouses to experience. We liked the small size and the property was beautiful, though for some reason 2 of the 3 rooms I had booked 6 months ago were cancelled with no notice to me, making for a challenge to just get into the property and then again to check in. The staff were friendly and helpful and luckily we got the rooms that were booked. I'm not sure if it was a slow period compared to colder months and maybe things were scaled back, but we came away disappointed in the lack of entertainment/activities and inconsistent quality of the drinks. Having said that, the silent disco party was a lot of fun - would have been nice to have the rooftop bar open other nights with a DJ or something. We're also used to the sports bar being a lively place for drinks and dancing after the entertainment, and this one was more like hanging out in average hotel lobby bar. Made for a rather dull experience, unfortunately, and we're unlikely to take a chance on the Ziva or Zilara brand again.

Needs improvement on food and entertainment

Great staff and beautiful rooms and resorts but the entertainment and food does not match. A few improvements and this would of been a much better trip

Fantastic Resort - just needs more shade

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 days ago

We just returned from Hyatt Zilara. It is a wonderful, small, impeccably clean - gorgeous - resort. Our room was large, well-appointed and housekeeping was excellent. All the restaurants are very good, and we especially enjoyed the Lola Beach where we sat on the outside veranda in the cooling night breeze. Our only ask of the Hyatt is to supply more shade options. There are very few palm trees on the beach and minimal shade around the pool. The "huts" on the beach were always gone by 7:30am and on a few days the umbrellas could not be raised because of the winds. The cabanas for rent are very expensive ($109 - $139USD/day) and quite hot because the screens/sheets block the breeze. It should be a minimal cost for Hyatt to erect additional shade options. Like many beaches this beach is suffering with the seaweed. They do their best to clear it daily, but it is a problem for those wanting to use the beach.

Good, not great

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 days ago

The resort is nice, good location and a second stay, first as the Secrets Capri (2007), now the Hyatt Zilara. I remember the Secrets more fondly and was a bit disappointed in the rebranding. Food. About average to slightly above average. The specialty restaurants were a bit of a disappointment (there are only three) but the buffet was a pleasant surprise with Michelle and Jose Luis always greeting us with a smile and the grill girls at breakfast made some amazing eggs. The Capri was below average (Carlos the waiter was fantastic), The Lola Beach was average but Tempest was very good. The Lola snack bar was above average for a quick meal at the beach. The afternoon lunch grill specialties at different places around the pool where Javier grills were amazing. He does a Fabolous job on the grill and everything we tried was amazing. Coffee shop was nice, tasty snacks, ice cream and a variety of beverages. Drinks. Best I can say is below average, with the exception of the Mixology Bar in the lobby, Ivan and Lesley were great bartenders, very attentive and excellent drink makers. You have to try the smokey margarita, hands down the best drink ever. The other bars were below average, (Jorge and Alejandro at the beach bar were really good) not bad service, just not good drinks. Once in a while we got lucky but for the most part, out of 12 different drinks tried, 3 or so were actually good. It appears they use straight concentrate instead of mixing it with water first and it makes the drinks way too tart, especially cranberry, when I added water, they were better. Pool. Water temps were nice, plenty of chairs and not too noisy, they have a quiet side and a louder side. The water was dirty most of the time with a nasty sunscreen film on top for most days. The bottom of the pool is covered in sand and very ruff on the feet, also too shallow to really swim. Did not like the extra charge for the cabana's but that appears to be a Hyatt thing. Most remained unused because of the hefty daily charge. Most attendants serving drinks were not very good, ordered water about 8 or 10 times and never got it, very uninterested in service. That is with the exception of Bianca, she was amazing. She would drop off drinks or water as soon as she seen the empty bottle or glass. So engaging always with a smile and cleaned up after the ignorant pool goers who do not return empty glasses, plates and bottles leaving a mess. Room. Basic but nice, clean and has everything you need. If you end up on the "tropical" side, it is not the most pleasing to the eye, we had a dumpster, water truck and a knocked down fence. We did upgrade later in our stay and loved the new room overlooking the pool on the 5th floor, beautiful views and a great breeze (thanks Kimberly). Beach. It was ok, tons of sargassum but that is no fault of the resort. The sand was nice and good to go for a walk. Not good for snorkeling so leave the gear at home. Entertainment. So much stuff to do. Juan and Dulce were great and always engage with the willing and dont bother those who want to just relax. We did about everything they offered and enjoyed it all, painting, taste tests, Spanish class, dancing lessons, walks on the beach, games, ping pong, etc. Miscellaneous. Bell boys were very good, front desk efficient (Kimberly was great at check in and follow up issues). Overall it was a nice trip. I doubt I would soon return to this location but I would not tell anyone not to go, it was good just not great.
