About the Hotel

A fifty year long passion for hospitality. It was 1955 when Paolo and Ileana De Ferrari, the descendants of a noble Genoese family, first saw the Biodola beach at the Island of Elba. It was love at first sight, the crystal clear water and the fine sand, the delicate flowers growing along the dunes and the intense scent of mastic and cork trees in the air were so compelling they never wanted to leave again. Some of the extremely lucky guests to visit this beach are Errol Flynn, the famous Hollywood star who stopped here to enjoy the peace of this unexplored paradise just as the De Ferrari’s did. In 1966, ten years after Flynn, Anthony Quinn, Rita Hayworth and Rosanna Schiaffino came to the bay to shoot the film “The Rover” at the Tonnara of Enfola, the striking promontory facing the Hermitage. It was exactly here, on the Biodola bay, that Paolo Ferrari realized he could construct an elegant, first-rate building hosting people from all over the world in search for peace and relaxation.

Wonderful staff and wonderful location

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 8 months ago

Wonderful staff and location. I visited this hotel a number of years ago. We returned with our now 7 & 10 year old boys. We have also visited the sister property - Del Golfo in Procchio too. We love the hotel as he staff are so good, they get to know you so quickly. We weren't even there for a week and they know your kids what they like, they build a rapport very quickly and make it a priority for you to feel welcome. Location is amazing being so close to the bay. 10 minutes from the Port. The rooms are fine. Great turn down service. They note when you go to breakfast and dinner. Again staff are professional. I guess some clients expect more from the rooms for 5* but look at your location and the level of service you receive in all parts of the hotel. That is a holiday. Special mention to the watersports ladies who were very good. The wine sommeliers (Giuseppe and the young man from Trentino), and Fabio at the poolside. Thank you to the team at the Hotel Hermitage.

Never 5 *****

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 9 months ago

We booked top of the range suite and room and expected a 5 Star Service but were very disappointed during our 10 night stay. The Beach was totally overcrowded (like sardines) and on arrival we were allocated 4 Deckchairs in the last row of 4 next to Waste Bins. Totally shocking taking into account the price we paid. Day 3 of our stay we were allocated chairs in row 2 but never made it to the waterfront for the rest of the stay. We realised that Tables in the Restaurant and Deckchairs on the Beach are reserved for VIPs who have come to the hotel for years. So if you are new like us you have to take what’s left. The Staff in the various Restaurants and Bars were very efficient and friendly and the Food was good although very expensive. Breakfast Buffet very average and not 5 Star! A compliment also to the Housekeeping staff who were very helpful and friendly. During the whole 10 days we were never greeted or welcomed by the General Manager or Director ( i think it was him in the blue suit) who was floating about and joking with staff. The Reception ie front of House was very unfriendly and not what you would expect from a 5 Star Hotel. I now wonder what the Star allocation criteria’s are in Italy.!?? The Gardens and Plants are not well looked after and Cleanliness of general areas was not good and the Hotel requires major Refurbishing and investment in the years to come. All in all not what we expected and we will not return and can’t recommend it either.

We spent 5 nights in the Hotel as part of the FAST conference (INFN) and enjoyed our stay very much. Not to mention amazing location and delicious food, we would like to underline exceptional service and say many thanks to Maitre Alessandro for providing it to us. It was top notch!

We stayed here for our honeymoon after travelling round Tuscany and what a place to relax, enjoy and eat some delicious italian food and wine! The hotel had impecable service and attention to detail. The staff were very friendly and attentive and the hotel had lovely, rustic Italian rooms.

Old school at it best

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed September 21, 2021

Perfect experience; polite and extremely well organized staff, always welcoming always there for you. Karim, Nino, Giuseppe and Tomaso thank you for probably best service we ever had. Very good food - I would absolutely recommend half board, it is 95% of a-la-carte quality. Great selection of vines - fairly priced! Facilities are little old but very well mantained, cleanness is on top level. Private beach with comfy beds lifts really high level of the hotel to even higher one. Truly pet friendly. Staying here was pure 5 star experience, I felt like watching James Bond movie without guns and stunts of course 😉 Expensive but worth every penny!
