Reviews for InterContinental Hayman Island Resort

Poor experiences - Poor customer relations - Not worth 5 stars

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

I would not recommend the intercontinental hotel in Hayman island. It will leave you feeling disappointed and robbed. From the very beginning of the booking I had issues with the incompetent reservation staff at the hotel. There were issues regarding how much I had to pay in regards to the deposit and I was having staff call me at untimely hours in the UK with conflicting information about payment amounts. This was worsened when staff told me that I would lose my booking completely after paying money towards our stay. Additionally, I received calls telling me to settle my stay and come to reception even though I wasn’t even on the island. On arrival I was misinformed by the welcome team again about payments which continued with the night manger on reception duty perpetuating fiction. It seemed that the staff were ill equipped with the hotels policy. The overall hotel room was lovely and the restaurant staff were always friendly and accomodating. However, the activities and experience team at the hotel were absolutely useless at their jobs concerning competency, friendliness and efficacy. For the price tag of staying in a five star resort the experience and activities team made it feel like you were staying at a 2 star hotel at best. When you stay in a five star hotel you expect that there would be one main person you can speak to that will book all your activities for you. You expect them to arrange your timetable and contact the necessary team for activities you want. This is not the case at Hayman. The booking system is the worst I have ever encountered in terms of being user friendly. We were expected to create our own itineraries and instead of having one person you could speak to at their activity desk there were three people with different activities. None of them willing to give information and help on other activities. The staff were very abrupt to speak to. There was no sense of hospitality in regards to mannerisms or actions. I think it’s absolutely ludicrous that they expect patrons to cancel 24 hours before an activity otherwise you will get charged the whole amount, yet the activities team had no issue with cancelling 10 minutes before a scheduled event. When you’re on a holiday you want to relax and enjoy your time away. However with the cancellation policy we spent days waiting around to do activities that were cancelled last minute. The activities as well were very poorly run and misadvertised. For example my partner and I went on the Whithaven experience. We were informed we would have equipment to use when we were there on the beach and a picnic. The picnic consisted of half a wrap since there wasn’t enough for a whole wrap for everyone, and a few pieces of fruit with sand already covered on it. The sporting equipment was simply one pair of child googles to share around 8 people and a half inflated soccer ball. When asked about snorkels the team advised us that due to the sand on the beach they didn’t like patrons using the company’s snorkels as the plastic could scratch. During the stay my partner and I raised and discussed these issues with the on call manager. For the stress, inconvinence and poor experiences we recieved no satisfactory apology or any compensation. I can’t stress enough how very disappointed and disillusioned I am with the hotel and Intercontinental franchise.

Beautiful Place to Celebrate

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We stayed here for the first time to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary. We had a wonderful 3 days and were greeted with a complimentary bottle of wine in our room! We enjoyed great weather and spent most of our time relaxing pool side. All the staff were friendly and said hello whenever we passed by, with a special mention for Atama who was the wonderfully friendly, welcoming face that greeted us from our first night at dinner, provided great service and constantly made us smile during our stay! Our room and view were excellent! Our booking included breakfast and dinner, which proved to be great value for money. The food options were very good although all the restaurants did not open each night possibly because the resort was not at capacity. The buffet breakfast was good and quite varied with the freshly baked bread a highlight! However, we note that there was a lack of attention to minor details in some areas that we expect of a luxury hotel/resort experience (as noted in other reviews) including the inadequate solution to the birds during breakfast at the main restaurant.

Australian Beauty

I'm so happy Intercontinental took charge of this property. It's truly a beautiful place. The staff are very engaging and knowledgeable about the environment and wildlife. Regarding wildlife we saw wallabies, possums, turtles and an array of native fish and bird life - all in their natural habitat and well preserved. The property is well equipped for families with plenty of activities. I have no hesitation to recommend. Simone

Second time and still great!

This is hands down one of the best resorts in Australia we have been to. Beautiful tropical island, first class hotel, attentive and friendly staff. Not many people even in the middle of school holiday. When hiking you have the whole island to yourself. We visited it again in April of 2024 and it was as good as our first time one year ago (if not better). Plenty of things to do. Most of them are free😊: - 2 pools to choose from (infinity and a regular one, which is the largest in the southern hemisphere). Please note that in a larger pool the water is colder due to its size. - Several restaurants and cafes on site. BamBam is more affordable, whereas Pacific commands premium prices. Amici’s offerings improved over last year. - Nature walks, both on the beach (especially at low tide) and inland isle hiking tracks - Wildlife watching. We saw (and fed) cockatoos, wallabies, lizards, lobsters, stingrays, hermit crabs, sea cucumbers etc If you are lucky, you may spot a sea turtle. - Sailing, kayaking, paddling. I think that we got a good value for money. Things to watch out for: - Restaurant bills do add up, especially if you go heavy on alcohol. - You will need hiking shoes if you decide to explore the inland outside of paved areas. - When walking through water at low tide beware of stingrays. They can sting when stepped on. Things that can be improved: - More floating devices could be provided for kids. - Ice cream (complimentary) for breakfast would be great. Cruise ships do it😊 - It is sad that chocolate fountain is gone☹ - Complimentary sparkling water (like Sheraton Port Dougles) would also be great. We were very happy to have a break at Intercontinental Hayman Island and hope to return again.

4 days in paradise

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 weeks ago

We spend a few days in paradise! We were in Hayman island for 4 days which is about the right amount of time to explore the area and also the dining choices on the island. The staff is very friendly and our stay was very relaxing, we would definitely want to come back.
