About the Hotel

Pirates used to be a major concern for The Buccaneer – in the 17th Century, the great house had to be hidden in thick vegetation far from the eyes of roving marauders. A Danish baron turned it into a sugar mill in the 1700s, and in 1947 the Armstrong family opened small hotel where guests – called “continentals” – would make their own drinks and help rake the beach. In the years that followed, Lauren Bacall, Michael Jackson and Johnny Carson all graced the hotel register. Recall The Buccaneer’s colorful past with bright, traditionally appointed guestrooms and a bar menu of classic cocktails – Cruzan Confusion, anyone?

Great place to stay on St Croix!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

We had a great stay at the Buccaneer resort! The staff was outstanding, and the rooms, grounds, and restaurants are all excellent. We also loved the beach area, so beautiful. I would highly recommend staying here if you are going to St Croix.

Perfect and Relaxing Girls Trip

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 days ago

This resort was the perfect choice for a girls trip. Safe, beautiful views, great food at the 3 restaurants, and the staff was outstanding. The staff knew our names and greeted us by name even if they were not serving us. This includes people carrying luggage, front desk staff and especially the wait staff at the restaurants. Specific staff that were outstanding included: Mayra, Bianca, Claude and Cassandra. We stayed in a Luxury Ocean View room that was near the Sugar Mill and the Great House. This location was about a 5 minute walk to the beach and a 10 minute walk to the pool. It was 3 minutes to the main house with a large restaurant and complimentary breakfast. The resort rooms was very quiet and peaceful. The room was impeccably clean with soft sheets. Rooms were serviced daily by requesting with lanyard on door. Mermaid beach was our favorite with lots of chairs and staff that served you from the beach. Live Music at The Terrace in the evenings was wonderful. I enjoyed several excellent fish dishes at the Terrace. We also enjoyed the fire dancers at a delicious dinner at Beauregards. Made reservations for dinners about two weeks in advance of our stay with the concierge. Location was about 20-30minutes from airport and about 8 minutes by taxi to Christiansted. We did a 1/2 snorkling excursion with Carribean Sea Adventures to Buck Island and this is highly recommended tour company. Taxi driver that is highly recommended is Joseph at 340-277-6133. Safe and reasonably priced. Overall this resort proved to be the perfect location for a girls trip. We only left the resort once because we enjoyed the atmosphere so much.

Caution staying here in current political climate

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

I suggest extreme caution in booking any stays at this hotel in the current political climate. We booked a stay at the hotel arriving on January 3; unfortunately for us, the FAA closed airspace when they conducted a military operation in Venezuela to capture the president. Anyways, our flight was cancelled and we would not have been able to rebook for several days. We had read about stranded passengers in the Caribbean and decided it didn’t make sense to try to go for only a few days, particularly when so many people were trying to leave. We weren’t unprepared—we had travel insurance. However, we learned acts of war weren’t covered by our plan. Given the extenuating circumstances we tried to work with the hotel to see if they would honor a refund. Their answer was no that per their policy was that we were on the hook for two nights of our six night stay ($3700 of the $9000 stay that included two rooms). I reached out numerous times to customer service (Benjamin) explaining our situation to try to find a solution—this was a trip we had saved up to take my elderly parents on and my daughter to celebrate her 5th birthday and heartiversary before her next procedure—but I was ghosted by Benjamin. I know from news reports that many hotels profited off of this whole debacle—stranded passengers that were price gouged for last minute accommodations. I suspect that the Buccaneer did not lose money. FWIW, the airlines, airport parking, rental car company, excursion companies, and our dog boarder all reimbursed us. The Buccaneer Resort is the only business that refused. Of note, we did book the hotel through Priceline, who promptly sent us money for the refundable part of our trip; Priceline also tried to contact the hotel on our behalf without success. We did try to book direct (not sure this would have helped us), but per Benjamin, the website wasn’t reflecting their promotional pricing so we just booked through Priceline since it was easier. I’m sad that my family didn’t get to take this trip and that we lost so much money even though we were prepared with travel insurance. I hope this warning helps others considering Caribbean travel—make sure you figure out the cancellation policy for your accommodations for situations like this or you could be out a lot of money.

Wonderful week in paradise

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

Had the most relaxing week for our 43rd wedding anniversary. As others have said, the rooms could use a bit of upkeep (the shower control was loose, a burnt out lightbulb didn’t get replaced) and it’s not an inexpensive trip — but the staff is so wonderful, and the grounds and beaches are maintained so beautifully — that nothing else really matters. Hoping to return!

Tropical Paradise

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Great surroundings, friendly professional staff, fine food, perfect beach experience. The Buccaneer exceeded all of our expectations. We came for the tropical beach and were not disappointed. We spent our time at Mermaid beach, but there are two others if that ever got crowded. Dozens of comfortable beach chairs with a sort of mesh fabric material, plenty of umbrellas and small tables. You are right next to the Mermaid restaurant and bar and friendly servers check on you frequently. The resort provides free access to everything from snorkels and goggles, towels to kayaks. Everything was clean and the sandy beach was well maintained. No sea grass or rocks, just soft sand out into the ocean. Perfect. We got a ridge room which had a great view and was a bit secluded. Very close to the lobby and the daily breakfast buffet in The Terrace. But a bit of a hike, up hill, back from the beach. A courtesy van can drive you. Besides being very spacious, including a sort of walk through closet with plenty of storage, the highlight was our patio with two lounge chairs. We were here when not at the beach, even at night because the low was 75 degrees. Highly recommend the ridge room, which the website might call luxury oceanfront room. The dinners rotate among the three restaurants each night. Dinner was great at the Terrace, great view of the beach and a live pianist playing standards. But dinner at Beauregard, literally on Grotto Beach, was amazing. We had dinner at sunset, very good soft tacos, and after the sunset a fun show of people twirling fire. A breathtaking setting. The concierge booked cabs for us, using drivers that contract with the resort and they use a standard rate sheet. The concierge was helpful with planning outings for us. Like all staff we encountered, they were friendly and professional. The resort was well maintained, clean, well landscaped and decorated. This place is a gem. It is not cheap, but you get what you pay for. And the Buccaneer was worth every penny. We will be back.
