My wife and I stayed at Hotel El Convento for her birthday the first week of April 2026. It was our first stay in San Juan. We very much appreciated staying at such a historic location and experiencing Viejo San Juan. The hotel's restaurant, Patio del Níspero, was amazing. The entire staff went above and beyond for us (special shoutout to Juan L. for his exceptional service). We highly recommend El Convento if you have never been to San Juan for your stay, but also if you are in the area, please check it out. It has a rich history and is worth the visit.

The views were amazing, the staff was all super helpful and the location was perfect. I was happy with the room, the size was good and it had a desk which was needed and used. Even though there were weddings happening basically every night, they were not intrusive. I couldn't hear them at all in my room, and the live music they brought in actually gave a great ambiance to the lobby area.

El Convento Hotel’s location is genuinely fantastic—stepping right into the heart of Old San Juan feels like winning the location lottery. We loved chatting with the bar staff on arrival; they pointed us toward some amazing local rum drinks that made the first evening special. That’s where the positives end, though, and honestly, it’s hard to overlook how much the rest of the stay missed the mark for a place charging over $600 a night. We rolled in after a brutal 16-hour travel day at 10 PM, hoping for a smooth check-in. Instead, we were greeted by a receptionist who seemed more bothered than welcoming—she slid the keys across the counter with minimal eye contact, mumbled something about breakfast location (which we had to ask twice to clarify), and when we asked about room service, just shrugged and said everything was shut, with zero suggestions for nearby options in Old Town. It felt like we were interrupting her night, not guests she was supposed to host after a long journey. The room itself was disappointing. For that price, I’d expect crisp, fresh linens, but ours felt thin and worn, and we definitely found a couple of stray hairs in the bathroom that weren’t ours—hard to shake the feeling it wasn’t just from the previous guest. The breakfast area the next morning was rough: sticky tables, and yes, bird droppings visible on the windowsill where we were trying to eat. Not the “charming old-world” vibe the hotel markets; just plain neglect. And those elevators? Sounded like they were one creak away from giving out every time—definitely not inspiring confidence when you’re lugging luggage. Service-wise, beyond the bar team, it was consistently flat. Questions were met with sighs or bare-minimum answers, like we were asking for a favor rather than information we’d paid for. When you’re positioning yourself as a luxury option in a competitive market like San Juan, guests notice when the basics—cleanliness, working amenities, basic courtesy—feel like afterthoughts. Would I recommend it for a special stay? Unfortunately, no. The location is a huge win, and a few staff members shone, but the core experience—especially at that price point—left us feeling like we’d paid a premium for something that didn’t deliver the fundamentals. It needs serious attention to detail to match its aspirations.

I stayed at El Convento while managing an event for 20 fellows working on food solidarity. Many people had dietary restrictions but the kitchen was very accommodating. Antonio, Gabriela, Luz, Fabiola, and this one man with the kitchen with a bun (hopefully he knows who he is) were AMAZING!!!!! I witnessed them work with problematic guests with so much grace while I was there. Their capacity to hold multiplicities and shifting needs was impressive to say the least. They were very attentive to our needs and very patient. Attached to the hotel was a coffee shop and local farmers market which was very convenient for guests.
