Embracing a legacy of rich history dating back to the 15th century, Hodelpa Nicolas de Ovando Hotel is located on the first paved road of the New World, Calle Las Damas, in the heart of Santo Domingo’s historic Zona Colonial, designated a UNESCO Heritage Site. Comprising three stone houses and courtyards built in 1502, the historic building was the very first to be built on the country’s colonial land and the home of the town’s founder and first Spanish governor of the Americas, Nicolas de Ovando, and his companion Christopher Columbus.

The location is quiet and feels very elegant. The employees are kind, welcoming, and easy to approach. Even though it’s very hot outside, the beautiful plant scenery makes the atmosphere relaxing. The rooms are decorated beautifully with a Spanish colonial style that I absolutely love. It’s definitely worth the money if you’re looking for peace and relaxation.

This past weekend I had the opportunity to visit the HODELPA Nicolás de Ovando Hotel in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo. The infrastructure is truly phenomenal, everything is well-preserved and clearly marked; the areas are well-defined and their history is written in English and Spanish, with historical references to points of interesting facts; the views are phenomenal. The way the light plays in some areas of the property is incredible, perfect for photos and videos. One of the things that impressed me most is how they identify each tree, plant, and shrub, highlighting its seasonality and, in some cases, explaining the uses of these plants for remedies, seasonings, and food. Regarding the food, we only enjoyed breakfast, which was very vast and delicious. The only area for improvement in our experience was the service. In our case, which was an anniversary gift from my wife, while the room decor was phenomenal, the staff's timing in completing the service and providing a unique experience was lacking. They failed to deliver the charcuterie board and sparkling wine on time, thus missing the opportune moment. The response to any concerns was unsatisfactory. During breakfast, we were shown to the table, which was fine, but when we sat down, the silverware wasn't set, so we had to ask a waiter to do it. I understand this is a basic part of service. While it's true that one is captivated by the facilities, the service is a fundamental part of the experience. I hope they can improve this aspect in the future.
