Ten centuries of history radiate from the hand-hewn stone walls and terracotta floors at Tuscany's Castel Monastero, the centerpiece of a small medieval village called Monastero dell'Ombrone. The monastery first appeared in correspondence in 1044 in connection with the nearby Berardenga Abbey and over the centuries noble families transformed it into a castle. Thanks to painstaking restoration efforts, the ancient ambiance remains – guests from all over the world go for bespoke experiences, such as a Bentley ride through the Tuscan countryside.

Best hotel we’ve stayed at so far in Italy (out of 15). The surroundings are stunning, the pool area is fantastic, and both restaurants are truly excellent. The staff were lovely and the service consistently great. There are a few rookies on the team, but with their positive attitude and willingness to learn, they’ll be top-notch in no time. Our room was clean, beautifully renovated, and genuinely enjoyable to stay in. I rarely leave 5-star reviews, but this hotel has absolutely earned it!

We stayed 6 nights at this property, following three glorious days in Florence and several in Rome. Located just about 25 minutes from Siena, this resort is ideally situated for travelers who want to visit the lovely hillside villages and Tuscany’s wine country - which was our goal. We did not have our own car but had arranged drivers to take us to wine tastings and a cooking class during our stay - and wish we had arranged a cooking class on site as well. The property was very kind to upgrade our suite reservation to a Royal Suite, and though I was not a fan of the stairs in our room my husband loved the balcony. Accommodations are rustic - some rooms have more decorations than others to elevate the elegance. Our suite was a bit spartan and dark - this is a renovated medieval property so we just went with it but I would perhaps have liked more light and something on the walls. There is twice daily housekeeping. It was hot during our stay so the fresh towels were a godsend. Guests may enjoy three beautiful pools and a spa. We wish we had had the time! Two restaurants are on site: the Michelin Starred La Contrada and La Cantina, which is more casual but also excellent. We enjoyed dinners at both. La Contrada absolutely earned its star - the dishes were an unexpected infusion of flavors and delightful. Service was beyond fantastic. La Cantina was also wonderful — excellent service and beautiful dishes. Breakfast during our stay was served outside at La Contrada and included every offering we wanted and then some. Additionally you may order an omelet or pancakes etc… Service at this property was excellent. There was a period that was incredibly busy due to many guests attending the Bocelli concert and you could tell that staff were really hustling. It did not affect us at all. There is something about enjoying wine or cocktails in the small medieval piazza while the swallows talk to one another that is incredibly peaceful. And truly, the only noise we ever heard were the conversations between the birds. We felt refreshed from our visit so that our return to Rome and then home could make us feel as though we recharged our spirits.

We can only thank all the care and affection we received at the hotel, from all the staff and also from Chef Davide. Special thanks for Graziella, the General Maneger.

Set in rolling Tuscan countryside 20 minutes outside Siena the hotel is a beautifully restored monastery with each room unique. Michelin starred restaurant tasting menu exceptional. Breakfast every morning sitting in the courtyard was also glorious. All staff were courteous in the extreme. 3 parallel outdoor pools set at different levels all great for serious swimming or relaxing. Pool bar adjacent well stocked. Spa very good especially the salt pool! Bio-sauna not working & on the Thursday all hot area rooms were cold before 6 pm?? Good but not exceptional 50 minute massage. Overall highly recommend for a stay of anything up to a week of truly indulgent luxury!
