Enjoying our stay at the Melia Las Antillas

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 days ago

We have only been here a few days, but so far we are happy with this resort. Beach is beautiful, pool is clean and water is warm. There has been no need to save chairs as lots always seem to be available. We are staying in an ocean view room on the fifth floor which has a nice sitting area and is kept clean. Greta and Naidely from the concierge services have been very friendly and helpful. Check in was quick and staff at the front desk/reception have also been friendly and helpful. So far we have had no issues with food or drinks. We did bring ketchup, mustard and maple syrup with us as these items do not always appear to be readily available. Drinks, particularly the mojitos and sangria are very good and beer appears to be readily available. Red wine has been available with dinner. Staff at all the restaurants and bars have also been friendly and quick to meet our needs. So far, very happy with our stay. Tip. Some vendors prefer USD over CDN dollars, so you might want to bring both with you.

Very bad food at this resort, be prepare to loose many pounds if you are lucky not to get sick at this hotel...

I will not give this resort more than 1 star for very bad food selection. If you are planning to come to this hotel, be prepare to eat every day rice and beans as side dishes, pork and chicken bones as meat selection...I could not believe not once I saw fish at the buffet or anywhere else at this resort. I have been many times in Cuba, there was always fish on the menu at different resorts, but not here. They live surrounded by ocean, but no fish at the menu. Fruit choices only papaya and quawa, again no even bananas! We gave a try as what they called burgers, it's,a thin piece of smth they call "meat". I would say you will be lucky if you don't get sick from the food at this resort... Again if you don't care about what you are going to eat during your stay here, beach is nice like anywhere else in Varadero... I would say it's a very bad management at this resort, if they don't care about people as it just very disrespectful to serve people food they do at this hotel... Theis hotel is the worse experience so far in Cuba. There is no excuse for the food they serve at this resort, as an explanation due to the overall shortages in Cuba, as I am only talking about local food they have here. But again I believe the management just does not care about it, as they obviously don't check the quality of their buffet food choices... Any other resort would be a better choice for vacation, just waste of our money coming to this hotel...

There were no bananas

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

I wanted to rate it higher because I really did have fun. But being honest, the hotel’s quality is very poor. The rooms are very outdated and in my experience, they all had issues. We had to change rooms, because the bed was broken and the shower curtain was right inside the bathtub. You could not take a shower without having it touch you. In the second room, a lamp was broken, as well as the safe, the bathroom door did not close, and the AC was kind of useless. The food was terrible. All vegetables and fruits were local, but there was a very limited selection, no bananas or mangos. It was always papaya, guava and pineapple. The actual dishes had very little taste, the meat was cooked with salt and that’s it. And you had to wait in line to get it. The sausages were terrible. They had something they wanted to pass off as ham, but us cubans know it as “jamonada”, and let me tell you, not even close to the real thing. The drinks weren’t great either, all watered down and the rum was a cheap low quality brand. I’m almost certain that the water they served in some places was tap water, it had a vey distinct taste, very different from bottled water. It made me nauseous. All public toilets were quite gross, and had that very distinctive public bathroom smell. The lobby toilet was shared, because the women toilets were broken and if you have my luck, chances are you will see a man’s back when trying to go in. The plates in the buffet were sometimes still greasy and you had to wait for someone to set up and clean the table because they were kind of understaffed. Terrible music. Positives: The staff were very kind and always attentive and helpful. The hotel is next to a dolphin aquarium so you can just pop there for a quick show. The dolphins are very cute and very well taken care of. The beach was beautiful. The pool was always clean. The à la carte restaurants have good food, I had lobster which was great (but you’ll probably still be hungry after, kind of small portions. I stayed 4 nights and they explained that we could only book once. Do not understand that) If I were you, I’d book another hotel, this one is not it. We had fun despite all of that, but it was sort of the person, not the place situation. And if you’re still planning to go after all that, pack some stomach meds, you’ll need them.
