Hotel Sacher Vienna

We returned home yesterday after a one-week stay at the Hotel Sacher. We have stayed at great hotels all over the world and definitely rank the Sacher as one of the most wonderful places we have ever stayed. We reserved a junior suite and were upgraded to the Nussknacker Suite (I don't know what category that suite falls into.) It was large and well-appointed. Every member of the hotel staff with whom we interacted was uniformly helpful, welcoming and friendly. The breakfast was excellent. We had a wonderful dinner at the Rote Bar restaurant pre-opera one night that was also first-rate. The fitness center is small but good and we used the sauna/steam/relaxation area almost daily, again it was a very nice touch and added to the enjoyment of our stay. We look forward to returning to the Sacher and also hopefully to staying at the Sacher in Salzburg in a year.

The hotel and staff are top notch!! We loved every bit of our stay. And the location is perfect. Hotel Sacher is worth every penny.

This property is a stain on the concept of a 5-star hotel. While the hotel is beautiful, the service level overall was practically non-existent. We would 100% never stay at any other Sacher property much less this one. Check-In After traveling internationally we were naturally tired. The attendant showed us into the room with little description, but mentioned the rooftop terrace as being a wonderful place for hot mulled wine which “we have everyday”! Zoom forward 5 days we had been enjoying the various Christmas Markets and the hot punch drinks and hot mulled wine, so we came back to the suite on a sunny afternoon and called down for some from room service. The initially said no problem it will be up shortly. 5 minutes later they called explaining they don’t make that but could go get some from one of the Christmas Markets. Hmmmm….Okayyyyy we asked if you did that would it still be hot? They said they could not promise that. This is 100% our experience. Basically the hotel is an Imaginary Fairy Tale which is false marketing as they have -0- follow through to make anything special even after painting the pretty picture. Turn Down Service Lack of proper turn-down service was particularly irritating. Sometimes there was turn down service, sometimes there wasn’t. Sometimes there was partial turn-down service such as beds unmade but no waters on night tables or no slippers at the bedside. They also hid the comforter on one occasion so we slept cold. Staff said we left DND light on which prevented them access for turn-down service but we know 100% we didn’t leave those switches on We asked to complain to the manager but only dealt with desk folks. Basically they blamed us for no property turn down service. Bathroom Issues Our suite has 2.5 baths. The main bathroom had such poor water pressure it was impossible to take a shower. The eventually remedied this but why wasn’t it working when we arrived? Obviously nobody in management audits the penthouse. The towel warmers and floor heaters never once operated in this room (and still don’t) despite complaining about it. We ended up walking to the other bathroom to shower each day. Concierge We asked in person at the concierge desk for a dinner recommendation. The gentleman never got back with us. No communication and if he happened to leave a voicemail on the suite phone, the phones don’t work properly. Messages cannot be retrieved. Still, at a property of such stature one would consider printed reservation reminders left in suite the proper method of communication. Blaue Bar Even while purchasing the nicest suite in the hotel you are not guaranteed access to the Blaue Bar which seems utterly ridiculous. And even if admitted, the faux intimacy isn’t worth the constant flow of patrons in/out of the bar being denied access and directed back to the Lobby. The Lobby does not feel like a lounge it feels like a Lobby so it isn’t a pleasant experience to sit there for a drink. We visited several other properties on our visit and were impressed with larger and cozier lobbies. Extras They researched our IG accounts and made us a personalized glass Christmas ornament with 2 of our photos in it. Creepy but okay. Summary Don’t stay at Sacher. Not worth it.

So I have stayed at many 5 star hotels in Vienna over the last years but this was my first stay at Sacher. I will cut to the chase....your experience will totally depend on the room you get and each one is pretty much unique. For reasons I dont want to elaborate on here I actually got to experience 2 rooms and 1 suite in a 3 day period. The ONLY way your will be truly WOWED will be if you get a suite (any kind of suite). Of course its all based on your expectations and what you are used to. I have been in quite a few luxury hotel all over the world so I am not very easy to impress. Your milage may vary. PS Be sure to try the Sacher breakfast, even if you are not staying there. THE BEST in Vienna.
