I chose the Salamander Hotel in Washington, D.C., expecting a top-tier experience aligned with its five-star rating. Unfortunately, what I experienced was underwhelming and at times frustrating — more in line with a standard Marriott stay than a luxury property. The issues began upon arrival. My suitcase was fully functional when I handed it over to the staff for storage while waiting for our room. When we were finally able to check in (to what was claimed to be a renovated, upgraded room — more on that later), I discovered the handle button was broken and the handle was jammed inside the suitcase. I reported this to the front desk, and while they sent an engineer to examine it, he returned saying it was irreparable. The hotel refused to take responsibility or cover the $44 cost to overnight a replacement, even though the damage clearly happened while it was in their possession. This incident cast a shadow over the entire stay. Other disappointments included: • A glob of hair in the shower upon arrival • Body wash that ran out during our first shower, which suggests it wasn’t refilled before we checked in • A visible stain on the comforter • A room that directly faced an active construction site, which meant we couldn’t keep the curtains open • Scuff marks on the walls and no sign of renovation, despite the hotel’s claim that it was an upgraded room This is simply not the level of service or care you expect from a five-star hotel. To be fair, a few aspects were well done: the room was spacious, the bathroom was nicely designed, and the scent throughout the hotel was pleasant. But those small positives didn’t make up for the overall lack of attention and accountability. This hotel has potential, but my experience was far from premium and I wouldn’t recommend it to travelers seeking true five-star service.

On the evening of August 1st, my husband and I were treated to an early birthday celebration by our eldest child at the Salamander Hotel in Washington, D.C. From the moment we pulled up to the valet through to the final course of dinner at Dogon restaurant, every aspect of the experience was flawless. The valet team welcomed us with warmth and efficiency, immediately setting a gracious tone for the evening. The front desk staff mirrored that same hospitality—kind, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. It felt like walking into a space where we were not just guests, but honored ones. At the lobby bar and outdoor terrace, the staff continued to shine with friendly, timely service and an atmosphere that was elegant yet relaxed. You could feel the care and thoughtfulness put into every detail of the guest experience. And then—table 15 at Dogon restaurant, 8:30 p.m. reservation—the highlight of the night. Our server, Carlos, was absolutely exceptional. With over 25 years in the hospitality industry myself, I can’t help but notice and evaluate service—but Carlos exceeded every expectation. His service was graceful, attentive, and perfectly paced. His knowledge of the menu was detailed and engaging, but it was his spirit that stood out most. He had a genuine will to make the evening special—not just for me, but for my husband as well. His table touches were consistent without ever feeling intrusive, and his joyful energy elevated our entire experience. Carlos made us feel seen, celebrated, and cared for. That kind of service is rare—and so deeply appreciated. We drove 45 minutes there and 45 minutes home, and it was worth every mile and every bite. Salamander DC has created something truly special—an environment where excellence is not just delivered, but embodied by every team member across every department. Thank you for making this birthday celebration one of the most memorable evenings we’ve had. We will absolutely be returning. Sincerely, Jackie Ford

If you’re looking for EXCEPTIONAL service, a beautiful hotel, a friendly and welcoming staff Mr Gonzalo Patino, Sabrina, Alexandra, Malik, Dolly, Natalia, Dewayne & Felipe are the people who make the Salamander! From the moment we arrived we truly felt pampered throughout our entire stay. The staff (Especially Mr. Patino who graciously listened to my grievances) went above and beyond to make my visit memorable. PS…Did I mention the Marble Bathroom :)

The facilities are top-notch as well as all the people that work here. For sure one of the best places in the DC Market. I would recommend this for all stays here

Salamander in DC is a must stay. The location is great. The accommodation was great. The energy and vibe are even better.

Not up to the standards of our stay at previously booked luxury link hotels. No in room coffee bar, no mini bar, blamed everything on Covid, and they were a new hotel, we would not stay there again. Definitely not 5 star, location good, no ice maker you had to call for it.
