Reviews for The Greenbrier

Know What to Expect

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 days ago

My wife and I stayed at the Greenbrier in late March 2024. I will preface this review by saying this is not our first resort experience and we do have a decent basis for comparison. To be blunt up front I was generally underwhelmed by our stay. My advice is to know what to expect and dispose of preconceived notions of how it will be. Reading the web site (and for what is costs!), I was expecting something pretty upscale. The grounds and buildings: The grounds are well kept and I thought in decent shape for the time of year we were there. There were some issues that should have been taken care of (like a bunch of signs laying on the ground along the walking paths that should have been re-hung or removed). The main building is showing age and has not been brought up to what I would consider 5 star condition. The hallways were also fairly dark and the carpets showing some age off the main floor and first floor. The room: Honestly, I have had better rooms at a Hampton than the room we stayed in. The room was dated and showed some age. The carpet was getting worn. The furniture was pretty cheap quality and the fit/finish was not good (doors loose and sagging, etc). The mattress was pretty saggy and seemed old. The bathroom was OK, but not exactly a resort feel. We’ve had more upscale bathrooms at B&Bs that charge a quarter of the price. Don’t expect to see really high-end appointments in your room. The window was dirty and the trim chipped up pretty well. We didn’t spend a lot of time in the room, but for the price we paid, I expected a LOT more. The amenities: In general, the amenities seemed fine. Equipment and facilities in good shape overall. The recent investment is evident here. There are plenty of activities every day to choose from, some included in the “resort fee”, some not. Be ready to pay for those not included, including additional “fees”. The “fees”: Be prepared for the fees. On EVERYthing. Room, food, stores, activities, all of it. This was one of the things that rubbed us a little wrong. There is a resort tax added to everything, but there is also a service charge added to everything. As a matter of fact, we were double charged the service fee for one dinner and did not notice until much later. I dislike these things on principle, but they are what they are. Just be aware they are going to be added. The food: While in general the food tasted ok, the portions we got were fairly small. As an example, I got the lobster pasta one night and there was a 2-3 oz piece of lobster on top of a handful of pasta for $60. We went back to the room so I could eat some of the road food we brought because I was still hungry. A good point was the buffet breakfast. It has a decent variety of food and an egg/omelet station. Expensive (as you would expect), but plenty of food. The Staff: The staff were very friendly and helpful. I want to particularly say the carriage tour driver we had was very nice (wish I remembered his name) and the attendant at the museum was also very nice and helpful. My wife purchased some shoes in one of the stores and the lady working there was also very nice and helpful. On a last note there seemed to be a lot of guests not paying attention to the dress code or really anything else stated on the web site and the staff not enforcing the “rules” of decorum for a high-end resort. Most people seemed friendly, though, and would say “hello” in passing. People were also pretty good about taking pictures for each other if asked. Overall, I think The Greenbrier is a decent 4 star resort with a 6 star price tag. This did not meet our expectations, but this review is more to temper expectations for other people thinking about staying there. From our perspective, it was worth going once to say we’ve been there, but we probably will not return.

Hotel is in middle of nowhere and you get stuck here with little options

Where to start? Let’s just make a list: 1) the hours of everything are strange. You can’t eat anywhere except a snack bar between 10a-11a. Coffee service stops at 9am. The casino doesn’t open until til 1pm on weekends. All the shops close before 6pm. At the golf course, the restaurants were not open for lunch. 2) lunch food service took over an hour. The main hall bartender was telling people to expect 60-75 minutes because the kitchen was that backed up. 3) the room has a VERY strong smell of paint and the windows do not open to let in fresh air. 4) JACKETS are REQUIRED for the Casino after 7pm. WTH. You don’t want my money if I am not wearing a jacket? Is this 1955? Positives: the staff are very courteous and friendly

This place is awesome. My wife and I cant stop talking about how you are pampered here. Great golf courses, spa, and food. Cold War Bunker tour was very interesting. We have made this an annual event with my wife's sister and brother in law. Always a great time. We have allready booked this year's trip.

Greenbrier Resort WV major disappointment

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 weeks ago

This 5 star resort is not worth 1 star. The restaurants are dismal. We ate at 3 out of the 4 restaurants. The steak was overcooked at their premier Prime 44 restaurant, the chicken tasted like rubber at the Forum, the fish was doused in old bay seasoning to the point that it burned your tongue and it was served cold, at Sam Snead restaurant. The service was slow to the point that we sat for 1 hour before we received the appetizer. The amenities, which you are being charged $39 per day, are either closed or there is a hefty extra charge. For example the indoor tennis court is $90 for 1 hour, the gym classes are $35, The bunker tour had a heavy paint fume smell which made us sick. The escape room nothing worked, so it ruined the fun. The room itself is spacious, however the bathroom sink was clogged and the thermostat does not go below 67 degrees. The train runs next to the property and blows the horn a few times a night. We asked to shorten our reservation by one day because we were having a dismal time, and we were told there would be an early departure penalty of over $500.

Regarding our trip to The Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV, what a treat! From beginning to end we felt like we were in heaven. The place is gorgeous, the food is tremendous, and the staff just outstanding! Our kids, aged 8 and 11, rank it as the best vacation ever...and that is saying a lot! We will definitely return...
