Reviews for Alden Suite Hotel Splügenschloss Zurich

Outstanding service in a lovely hotel

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

This is a lovely old-style hotel situated a two minute walk from the lake. We had a Master Suite with a balcony which was huge - bedroom, bathroom with walkin shower and jacuzzi bath, living room with balcony, additional toilet and plenty of space. Everything was very comfortable, including the massive super king size bed. Fruit bowl in the living room replenished at our request. What makes this hotel stand out is the outstanding service and friendliness of all the staff. We left each morning for trips and the staff on reception (including Amber who was super friendly and others but I cant recall names) offered us bottles of water for our trip. A couple of evenings when we got in late and couldn't be bothered to to out to eat, we ordered UberEats. Then the staff saw this they suggested bringing us plates and cutlery which was really helpful. All the staff were helpful and friendly making us feel very welcome. Breakfast has a limited selection but there is a variety of cooked eggs... we ordered on different days, eggs benedict, different types of omelet, fried eggs, scrambled eggs and all were cooked to perfection. We had to go to Zurich bus station for our trips and its a CHF 16 ride in an Uber, takes 10 minutes. We also ordered Uber back to the airport for CHF 36. I mention this because the only thing that we found a little irritating is the arranged transfer on arrival from the airport. The hotel had very kindly sent us a a pre arrival email offering to arrange pick from the airport which we accepted. Everything was fine - lovely big cab and driver greet. Except when we arrived the driver charged us CHF 150!! We felt that was extortionate - significantly more than if we had taken a taxi ourselves or booked an Uber. In future, I will remember to ask the price before booking a transfer via a hotel. In general, in Zurich, Uber is the cheapest way to get around unless you take trams or buses - about half the price of regular taxis in the city. Apart from that, our stay at the Alden was lovely and we would happily return.

Great accommodation and amazing staff!

We stayed at Hotel Alden for two nights, and the concierge and staff were extremely friendly—I can't emphasise that enough. We booked a standard room but received a free upgrade to a room with a balcony, which was amazing. The room was spacious and super clean. The only downside is that they provide only one key for the room, and the power outlets should be updated to accommodate C-type cables, not just USB power ports.

Moments of good but also average

So we were fortunate enough to get an upgrade to an executive suite which was a massive apartment with a lounge, dining room, 2 bathrooms and a very spacious bedroom . Unfortunately it was on the first floor and the hotel is surrounded by offices so we had to have the curtains drawn in the bedroom and bathroom all the time to have any privacy . Although the suite has numerous plug points none were in the bedroom at your side table - as is the usual practice - and the plug points were mostly neither on floor height or a metre up the wall so you had to use a chair or push a table near the plug point to charge anything. The main bathroom was huge but sported a tiny shower and just looked poorly . The basin stand had seen better days and the varnish was peeling off . The spare bathroom on the other hand was very modern . I personally found the decor odd. I think they were hoping for an eclectic look but it was a more a mashup of old ‘Bavarian’ style painted cupboards; 80’s decor and modern bits and bobs; grey crunch satin curtains and choc/camel geometric carpets . The lounge/ dining room had a magnificent wooden floor and pressed ceilings and was probably the best of the decor. Both tv’s in the room didn’t work and stopped working again even when fixed. They kindly offered for us to move but we had settled in already and when it broke again they did offer a fee breakfast or cheese board. Our one basin in the bathroom drained but they didn’t manage to fix that before we left . In terms of position it’s an office area so even though it’s close to the lake it’s but of a walk to the main shopping and restaurant area as well as the old town .

Not recommend!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 months ago

Firstly, housekeeping lost our personal items, including toothbrushes, toothpaste, and a face serum (all items in bathroom) This is highly inconvenient and raises concerns about the handling of guests’ belongings. Additionally, there was a persistent unpleasant intense chlorine smell in the stair and elevator area and which was quite off-putting. We told them, they had no expression on their face. To make matters worse, the women receptionist we interacted with was not particularly welcoming which did not align with the level of service one would expect from a hotel of your reputation(not all of them, the one on 24 feb at 18.45). We were staying at suit 3B. This is not the service level one expect when paying 500 chf per night. I would appreciate your prompt attention to these matters and an explanation of how you plan to address these concerns to prevent similar experiences for future guests. I hope this is not the famous “Swiss hospitality” .
