Reviews for Canyon Ranch Wellness Resort Tucson

Great Staff; Accommodations Challenging

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

I do not post many reviews on-line, however, after discussing our concerns with Canyon Ranch management, I feel obligated to post this one. Normally, our group of three goes to Miraval in Tucson, Arizona; however, this year, we decided to try Canyon Ranch, as Canyon Ranch appeared to be loosening up on their previous "no alcohol" policy. When I booked our three-bedroom casita a year in advance, I anticipated that CR would assign us to the Casa Grande that is pictured in the booking section of their website. Be advised that there is more than one three-bedroom casita at CR, and upon our arrival, we were assigned to a three-bedroom casita that had air conditioning and hot water challenges during our stay--along with décor and furnishings that appeared to be from the 80’s. As a result, if you have a group of three or more that wants to be together in a casita, I strongly recommend that you ask to see pictures of your assigned casita in advance, and receive some assurance from CR management that they have personally checked out your accommodations so that you do not experience the same challenges that we experienced on our recent visit. Although we had a great time and the CR staff was wonderful, this was not the luxury spa experience with accommodations to match that we expected.

A retreat of wellness

Our recent visit to Canyon Ranch left us rejuvenated and inspired. Upon arrival, the staff greeted us warmly. We received a delightful beach-sized bag that included: a personalized, stainless-steel water bottle; a booklet of scheduled activities; and a t-shirt—such a thoughtful touch. Jude, a seasoned staffer, made us feel right at home. He even took us to his office, sharing fascinating Canyon Ranch memorabilia and stories of its humble beginnings. Skyla guided us through every building, offering tips and insights about the grounds. Her personable approach made the tour enjoyable. The food was a highlight—light, nourishing and delicious. And the wait staff anticipated our requests before we did! Our room had all the comforts: a fridge, filtered water faucet, plush robes (spa-like), and an ambiance with adjustable lighting and fans. The spa area was a sanctuary. I dipped into the cold plunge, which was invigorating then indulged in the saltwater hot tub. The quiet room, complete with cucumber slices for the eyes, was blissful. Jennifer’s lymphatic massage left me feeling renewed. Her friendly demeanor had us laughing by the end. I enjoyed the Art of Origami led by a different Jennifer who had us feeling like pros by the end as we left with a beautiful dangling, origami piece to showcase at home. The team and fellow guests were warm and welcoming. Water stations and cool refreshments dotted the property. We explored the 2-mile trail along the perimeter—a peaceful escape. The overall grounds exuded peace with ponds, no cellphone calls (except in designated areas), and lovely, soft music in the dining areas. Check-out was a breeze. Since we drove, all we had to do was leave our keys in the room and were offered to indulge on property as late as 5 p.m. In summary, our stay at Canyon Ranch was a harmonious blend of relaxation, wellness, and unexpected delights. Highly recommended!

5 Stars from a Professional Spa Goer

This is my third trip to the Ranch. I really don’t think it can be beat for a wellness experience. You leave feeling so healthy and radiant each time. The food is so healthy and delicious. All the teas, juices, and elixirs. The treatments are incredible. One of the best facials I’ve ever had and every treatment was up to par.

Heading South

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 months ago

Canyon Ranch, Tucson. I first came to Canyon Ranch in the early years it was open. It was so much fun and such a stimulating and exciting place with much to do and interesting guests to talk to. The rooms were in great shape, the spa was lovely, and the indoor pools were functioning and beautiful. The food was delicious and one had to be careful or you would go home heavier than when you arrived despite all of the exercise! Most of the teachers there were incredible human beings with a huge basis of knowledge. I met many people that I stayed in touch with for years. Last Christmas I came back again to Canyon Ranch after not being there for five years. I had been going to Miraval because the campus was in much better shape and it was smaller. The staff seemed more attentive to your personal needs. Last year I decided to try Canyon Ranch again. I had a good time last Christmas, and really enjoyed myself. There were some interesting people here and though I noticed things were a bit rundown I overlooked everything because the experience itself seems so positive. I returned this Christmas to find things had really gone downhill. The first issue I encountered was though I removed it and downloaded it several times, the Canyon Ranch app listed my deceased husband as the primary user. I asked the staff before my visit to have this removed. I asked the staff during my visit to have this removed. Tomorrow is my final day and it is still in the app. It’s painful for me to see and really inappropriate. The spa was not up to snuff and because of that I changed in my room so that I didn’t have to walk on the floor in there. The slippers provided looked as if they had not been cleaned. It hasn’t been remodeled in many years and looks it. The indoor pools have been closed now for several years despite the fact that they were one of the most popular things here. Apparently, there is a problem with mold and the roof structure. Management keeps stating things will be remodeled over the summer, but I don’t know whether that will happen. The outdoor pool temperature was not 85 degrees as claimed but hovered at 81 or 82. Too cold for me when it is 55 degrees outside. Quite a few things were broken or not functioning in my room, and though they were fixed promptly it was frustrating to have to ask people to come and do what should’ve been fixed prior to my arriving. The light in the refrigerator which had a glass door repeatedly flashed so if you were sitting in the living room, you had to put a towel over the door. This was fixed once, but then started to happen again on the third day. The phone by my bed did not work on arrival and eventually was replaced. The lock on the bedroom door did not work and had to be adjusted. The mattress on the bed was old as it had a dip on one side of it and housekeeping made the bed without really tucking in the sheets. This caused an uncomfortable feeling during the night because the sheets kept coming untucked. Food service is a big problem in both the quality of the food and service in the dining room because it takes usually 30 to 40 minutes to get your food. The menu is limited and doesn’t seem to change and they have closed the café for dinner so the dining room is the only one option other than room service. The dining room needs remodeling as it is too small and dark and the reservation system is impossible. The wait staff needs to be trained to both deal with clients and organize the seating. I noticed there were fewer offerings in the evening for entertainment than in the past. The final insult happened this morning. It is New Years Day and I was sitting happily outdoors by the W café doing a little bit of work. As I am unable to type or write because of a wrist injury, I dictate quietly. The entire area outside the café was vacant. A wait staff woman from the café made a specific effort to walk outside to where I was quietly sitting and informed me that I was not allowed to use cell phones in this area. I let her know that I was not talking on the phone, I was merely dictating. She said that was not allowed either. It was really peculiar to me that on a beautiful holiday she would make a point of walking all the way outside and down to the fireplace to chastise me when there was no one else outside and I was speaking into the phone. I think a more appropriate decision on her part might’ve been to simply leave me alone. Being spoken to as if I were a child, and without respect is not an appropriate way to speak to a guest. I would never have spoken on my cell phone had there been one person outside on that terrace. However, I assumed that dictating a business letter would be fine if I did it in a quiet voice as there was no one out there. I am a courteous and respectful woman. It was very inappropriate for this employee to come out and chastise me the way she did. It didn’t make logical sense, and there was something very hostile about the way that she said what she said. It just made my morning unhappy. I am so sorry to see Canyon Ranch going downhill in this manner. I don’t really understand how it’s going to come back as it would take millions of dollars to restore all of the facilities and a lot of effort and energy going into training and re-organizing the way things work. I hope that this can be done because I love coming here but this time there were so many things wrong it was just depressing. Certain members of the staff tried very hard to make things right for me, but then things would just go wrong once again. The positives of my visit: Having a haircut by Lauren who was by far the best stylist I’ve ever encountered Hanging out with Jennifer at the front desk The women who teach the water aerobics classes Crescentio in the Double U Café I do hope to see them again.

Quick response in crisis

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 months ago

I had a stroke on my first day of vacation at Canyon Ranch after experiencing the death of my father. It had been a tough year. The staff responded quickly and I was taken by ambulance to the hospital. Fortunately it was a minor stroke and I only needed to stay in the hospital a couple nights. The staff of Canyon Ranch checked up on me and took care of all the details with my luggage, etc. I believe I was in the best place possible to experience this health event. Canyon Ranch will continue to be my home away from home as it has been for the past 25 years
