The Best of Patagonia: Glaciers and Summer Ski Luxury
Perito Moreno doesn't look real at first. The glacier face rises 200 feet above Lago Argentino in a wall of compressed blue ice that groans, cracks, and periodically sends chunks the size of apartment buildings into the water below. It is one of the only glaciers on earth still advancing, and standing at the viewing platforms as the ice collapses into the lake is the kind of thing you stop trying to photograph to simply watch.
Eight hundred miles north, Bariloche feels like an entirely different Patagonia. The best luxury resorts in Patagonia have settled here, at the foot of Cerro Catedral, the largest ski resort in the Southern Hemisphere. The season runs June through October, which means a traveler from New York or London can ski in July while everyone they know is at the beach.
This is one of those trips worth traveling long distances for. You'll leave having watched a glacier older than civilization calve into a Patagonian lake, and skied a mountain that empties out by afternoon. Argentina earns the distance.
