About the Hotel

Amanjiwo, enveloped by the rainforest of central Java, is set within a natural amphitheater – where the Menoreh Hills rise up nearby and the farmlands of the Kedu Plain spread below steep volcanoes on the horizon. Overlooking the world's largest Buddhist monument, Borobudur, this majestic 9th century UNESCO World Heritage site is perfect for personal reflection. Set in two graceful crescents, the 36 Suites feature sunken bathtubs and thatched-roof bale pavilions, and open onto private gardens. The Spa, with its outdoor relaxation bale, is home to treatments informed by Javanese healing and beauty rituals handed down through generations. Tennis courts overlook the Menoreh Hills, and yoga is practised both at the gym and outdoors. The 40-metre swimming pool, surrounded by loungers and parasols, offers respite amid rice paddies and banyan trees.

Reviews for Amanjiwo

Cultural experiences mixed with spiritual exploration in a luxurious setting with royal service.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

I've had to wait a few weeks to write this review. This was my first Aman hotel stay ever so maybe I'm being a softy, but my experience (it's more than just a "stay") at Amanjiwo was literally a dream come true. I planned my visit a year in advance and spent weeks messaging back and forth with my concierge to plan my visit. I stayed five nights so I had plenty of time to enjoy the many experiences available through Amanjiwo as well as simply enjoy the resort itself. The welcome experience is something you have to see to believe, showered with flower petals and then escorted to a seat in the main rotunda. You really are treated like royalty. Every staff member I interacted with or simply passed by was exceedingly friendly. Maybe I'm naive but the friendliness seemed very genuine, not just the typical 5 star, I'm-friendly-because-I'm-obliged-to-be kind of way. The professional staff I interacted with seemed truly happy to try and make me happy. Greeted by name by everyone, even staff members I had not met before. But a special mention deserves to be given to the concierge staff and the individual guides. Poor Vivian was probably tired of hearing from me in advance of my trip. I wanted everything to be just right and she not only delivered, she went far above and beyond what is typical for a luxury hotel, even investigating the possibility of an excursion that I asked about that no one else has every asked about before. And my guide/driver, Arifin. Truly spectacular! He was knowledgable (led my tour of various temples in the Kedu Valley), friendly (always smiling and sharing stories), professional (acted as a translator at times), concerned for my well-being (providing bug spray before I knew I needed it), and just spectacular. The facilities and property are amazing, as you would expect. Maybe there are a couple of little indications of the properties age, but easily overlooked because of the overall immaculate impression you get. The resort does not have a typical spa facility (no sauna, vitality pool, cold plunge, etc). Nonetheless, the two treatments I had in the spa suite were fantastic. My understanding is that there is a plan to build a traditional full spa facility. I did visit during Ramadan and more specifically, Eid fell during my stay. Be prepared for a lot of noise because of the celebration--cantors praying from the loudspeakers and fireworks on Eid. But, as a non-Muslim, it was great to be there during such an important holiday. Overall, this checked a lot of boxes for me. Cultural experiences, spiritual exploration, luxury stay and service.

Wonderful Setting and Exceptional Service

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

Amanjiwo is my 6th Aman property and my favourite one so far. The setting is dream-like, of course, with Borobudur in the horizon amidst misty mountains. But Amanjiwo holds up as a monument on its own. The timeless Ed Tuttle-designed architecture has aged gloriously. The rooms and all areas are beautiful and well-kept, and everything works perfectly. The highlight, as in all Aman hotels I’ve visited, is the service. It’s simply the best and something that no other luxury hotel group or single property I’ve stayed in can match (Capella is a close second). Housekeeping was magic - my room was cleaned every time I left. Overall, every request is fulfilled promptly and seamlessly with the perfect balance of discretion and friendliness. The staff also excel at anticipating your every need. The food at the restaurant is delicious. I had only Indonesian food during my stay, and all the dishes were well prepared and with generous portion sizes. I loved the sambals so much they prepared some for me to take back home. The Borobudur tour is well worth it. There is little signage or information at the site (and I didn’t see any in English). So unless you read up on it beforehand, it would be a shame to visit without learning about the history. My guide even helped me take the most amazing pictures of the Buddha statue inside one of the stupas. Tip- If you’re a light sleeper, make sure to use the ear plugs provided. Or the 4:30am calls to prayer from the neighbouring village mosque will wake you up. Amanjiwo is a special place. I will be back.
